Ephrata was a small and rural town in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is now a ghost town, located within the Ephrata School District. The population of Ephrata was 1,844 at the 2000 census. The first Europeans to visit Ephrata were Dutchmen in 1614 who named it "Hempsteadt", after their place of origin in Holland. The name may have been derived from an Algonquian word meaning 'place where they gather honey'. In 1784, John Penn granted 3 acres (1 km2) of land to James Craig on the condition that he erect a mill thereon. Craig built the first gristmill in 1810 and operated it until 1838. In 1812, George Washington visited Lancaster County for two days and ordered 200 men to be sent to help clear land for a canal through the county. The men arrived on October 10th and set about grading roads and building canals throughout the area; one branch of this canal connected Lancaster with Philadelphia. The Panic of 1837 caused many businesses to close their doors; however, some such as Craig's mill continued to operate until 1840 when they were taken over by Samuel Morse & Company who moved into bigger mills nearby in what is now Easton Township. By 1850, only two homes remained standing in Ephrata: one belonging to President James Buchanan and one being used as a schoolhouse by Ebenezer Scranton Jr.. In 1881–82, part of what is now Bethlehem Township merged with Lancaster County; Ephrata became part of this new township but never regained its former status as a small rural community similar to those around it which by then had all disappeared or had become ghost towns like Hanover Township which amalgamated with Reading Borough in 1988). In 1951-1957 parts of Reading Borough (which also included Bethlehem Township) merged with Allentown toward the end of each decade while remaining separate municipalities called Allentown-Bethlehem Municipality until 1998 when both communities were consolidated into One City under one government name - Bethlehem City Council - effective January 1st 1999 thru December 31st 2001 inclusive. There were no reports of damage or loss of life because generators functioned without fail throughout most business hours apart from brief outages later that evening when some lights went out due auxillary Generator failures Reuters also reported "state authorities said there are few injuries or property damage resulting from Wednesday night's storms." However local media outlets stated that home windows were smashed following downed wires so widespread power outage does not constitute "lightning strikes". Despite claims made by state officials only 5% total business interruption was documented statewide while 7% occurred west side where high wind speeds knocked down trees Reuters further notes “[A]ftermath shows businesses open but limited operations because too much time elapsed between storm declaration/dispersion/actuation” Although hurricane Wilma injured 4 people dead & destroyed over $60 million worth Of property statewide 635 businesses received damage awards totaling $27 million
