Ephrata is a borough in Berks County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 12,471 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. The first settlement in what is now Ephrata Township was made by Andrew Gregg and others in 1784 on the east side of Valley Forge Creek. In 1814, John Gregg built a gristmill on the confluence of Beaver and Lackawanna rivers. This mill became the center of operations for many years for all three settlements which clustered around it. The village site was developed mainly by grazers who used their horses to power water wheels to grind flour from sandstones brought downriver from Huntingdon County. The first store opened in 1868 and several small schools were established before Uniontown became an incorporated town in 1902. By 1916, there were over 100 businesses located within one mile (1 km) of the original village site; manufacturing had become more important than agriculture among these businesses. A new shopping mall called Valley Forge Crossing was built near present-day Unityville after nearby Bethlehem Steel proposed locating a new steel plant there that would have created thousands of jobs throughout much of western Pennsylvania but it never happened due to environmental concerns about lead pollution from steel plants then being built nearby
Ephrata was a small town in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,052 at the 2010 census. It is located east of Harrisburg and north of Allentown. The first Ephrata settlement was founded in 1797 by Captain John Forbes and his family. The original site of the town was on the Susquehanna River near present-day Ephrata Township. In 1801, Governor George Washington appointed Colonel James Wilson as the first Mayor of Ephrata. On November 3, 1801, Ephrata became a borough in Lancaster County under the jurisdiction of the City of Lancaster. On September 25, 1806, it became a village when it absorbed part of Bethlehem Township. In 1837, General John Culp captured Fort Necessity from Native Americans during the Battle for Erie Canal (1837). This event helped make Philadelphia an important port for American goods coming into India and other parts of Asia during that era. On December 26, 1850 – three years after General Philip Sheridan's Expedition against Native Americans – settlers from nearby Thorndale arrived at what is now known as Central Avenue to begin building what would become Ephrata Park which stretched along most of Central Avenue today before turning into Northampton Street today. At this time there were only 4 or 5 houses in central avenue with lots available only to those owning land across Northampton Street and Central Avenue itself including Captain Forbes' house on present day Delaware Ave., Judge Samuel Gregg's home on Delaware Ave., Drury & Goodrichs', Wirtz & Laughlin's store on Delaware Ave., Griggs & Brown's grocery store on Northampton Street between Central Avenue and Delaware Ave., plus one or two other stores that may have been built there but are no longer extant such as Pritchard & Son's hardware store which probably stood south west corner between Northampton Street and Southwark Road northeast side -northwest corner where I-79 now meets PA Route 6 -likely because there was little demand for goods produced here since much trade took place downriver at Indian Point Lock
