Ephrata, Pennsylvania (pronounced "eh-FRAh-tuh") is a town in Berks County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 10,243 at the 2010 census. It is included in the Reading, PA-NJ-PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Ephrata were Captain John Smith and his men on their way from Jamestown to Yorktown in 1714. At that time it was part of the Monongahela Valley and there were no settlements nearby other than those at Lancaster and Bethlehem. In 1802 Governor George Washington appointed Hiram Bingham as the first postmaster for Berks County. In 1825 the government of Berks County was divided into two districts: one with jurisdiction over Ephrata and the other over Reading. It wasn't until 1868 that a school was built in town; it had been established as a private school by President James Kapp before he became president of Pennsylvanian Railroad Company. The present school building was built in 1902 after a gift from Mrs. Anna Wertheimer de Vere Toddman which continues to serve as its main function today as the municipal library. The town's population continued to grow steadily until 1950 when it peaked with 11,521 residents but has since declined slightly due to competition from larger towns such as Allentown and Reading which have seen more growth during this period while Ephrata has stagnated or even shrunken in population size. The first European settlers in what would become Ephrata were French colonists who founded the village of Éphrata on November 1, 1755. They were met with resistance by the local Native Americans and were forced to leave by force. In 1802, John Forbes purchased land in what would become Ephrata from Nicholas Sprague. He donated it to the government for use as a military arsenal and post office called Forbesville. In 1812, General Andrew Jackson arrived at Forbesville to lead his forces against Canadian troops commanded by Sir John Colborne. When he found out that Forbes had built an arsenal there he ordered its destruction because it violated Ulysses S. Grant's agreement not to arm American rebels against British forces). The town was renamed Ephrata after James Forrestal (1801-1885), Secretary of War under President Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War (and later publisher of "Life" magazine). In 1865, when slavery was abolished in America, many African Americans moved into Ephrata from surrounding towns such as Greensburg and Allegheny County due to anti-slavery sentiment prevalent during that time period. They formed their own black community known as Ebenezer Baptist Church which continued until 1974 when all black churches in Armstrong County were integrated into one large body known as First Baptist Church of Armstrong County Incorporated
