Today, much of what makes Ephrata so unique has been lost in time - but some remnants remain. One example is the former Hewlett-Packard campus located just off Route 687 north of town. This complex built between 1951 and 1957 contains more than 100 buildings designed by architect Edward Durell Stone including the world's first multitronic computer system - used to control a large detachment of artillery during World War II - as well as various other technical advances. Ephrata ( pronounced "eh-FRAhta") is a census-designated place in Berks County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 7,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Reading–Lehigh Valley, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community has a rich history dating back to 1792 when Ephrata was founded by John Hennepin as an agricultural settlement on the east bank of the Susquehanna River. In 1827, it became part of the new municipality of Allentown. In 1881, it reverted to its original name and incorporated as a village. As all other municipalities within Berks County were annexed into Philadelphia in 1898, Allentown became an unincorporated borough with no governing body until 1953 when it was reincorporated as an independent city under the name of Ephrata. The first permanent settler in what is now Ephrata was John Hennepin who arrived from England in 1792 along with his family and began ranching on land that would later become part of present day Berks County. After five years he decided to move onto more fertile land farther west where he developed a farmstead called Hennepin's Mills which still stands today on mile long stretch of road known locally as "Hennepin's Lane". Eventually other settlers followed suit and by 1800 there were over 100 families living in what is now Ephrata including many Revolutionary War veterans such as General George Washington who rented out apartments here while staying at nearby Park Hall during his visit to Harrisburg in 1800 In 1827 alluvial deposits across the river caused water levels to rise and since there were no bridges available overriver so people had to rely on wagons and carts for transportation they named their new community 'Allentown' after then Mayor James Aiken who managed affairs for the town council which met monthly at Right hand Tavern on Market Street). When Philadelphia annexed all neighboring municipalities together into one large unified municipality they also created 'Ephrata' from these small villages making it one entity separate from bothPhiladelphia and Allentown however this entity never had any power or governance over either municipality unlike our current form where each village elects a governing body made up of elected officials that meets monthly
