The Coast Guard has been in the Ephrata area for over a century. In 1903, the first Coast Guard station was built on the site ofpresent-day Ephrata High School. The Station was called “Fort Mifflin” and served as a command post for coastal patrols and fisheries protection. In 1940, Fort Mifflin was renamed “Ephrata” after the town it sat in. The Coast Guard Station at Ephrata continued to serve as a command post untilits closure in 1972. Since then, there have been several minor changes to the structure of the Coast Guard Station at Ephrata. In 1993, an addition were constructed to house equipment used by law enforcement officers and firefighters during EMS response missions; this building is also known as Building A. In 1998, an annex were constructed to provide more space for offices and administrative support functions at the station; this annex is also known as Annex B. On July 1, 2018, it was announced that Headquarters for U S Customs and Border Protection would be moving from their current location on Market Street in Philadelphia to an adjacent property located near Route 202 in Township of Chesterfield within York County This move will create new positions at Headquarters along with significant expansion of operations inside and outside of York County . On December 12th2018 additional barracks were added to Annex B which will house up to 100 agents working out of 3 shifts per day including overnight shift
Ephrata is a town in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 6,471 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Lancaster County. The first European settlers in what would become Ephrata were Dutch and Swedes who came to the area in 1714. They built a small village on the Susquehanna River about three miles (4 km) north of present-day Ephrata. The village was abandoned by 1800 after it became difficult to trade with the surrounding Indians because of their hostility towards Europeans. In 1812, General Andrew Jackson's Corps of Mounted Infantry established a camp at Cynthiana for winter encampment and named it Ephrata after his wife Rachelle "Phebe" Jones he had met while campaigning against Native Americans near Cynthiana Station on July 4, 1812. He also founded Cumberland College in nearby Emporia which later moved to Phenix City and then back to Ephrata before finally locating in its present location in 1903. The name "Ephrata" was taken from an early settler's daughter who asked him where he got it and he replied "I don't know but I will give you one vote". In fact, there are several organizations that still use this name including the Elizabethan Theatre Company and First Presbyterian Church located downtown today). In 1869, when Lancaster County formed from part of York County, portions of what would become Ephrata were annexed into the new county as well as parts of neighboring Jennerstown and Downingtown counties; these annexation events led to the town's current designation as both a borough (1907) and township (1899). However, due to growing economic prosperity within Lancaster County during World War II many residents chose not to move or join Township government; instead they elected Borough Council members which continued until 1995 when Borough status was revoked effective January 1 following incorporation into Historic District #2 through zoning changes made by building inspectors pursuant to federal law known as Emergency Planning & Community Development Act OF 1955 which mandated such changes for all townships over 100 dwellings). During this time period much development took place within what is now called “Old Town” including: construction of local high school buildings (now North High School), grocery stores/cafeteria complexes (Chrysalis convenience store/grocery store complex), Bethlehem Steel plant being developed adjacent to North High School across from Central Park Drive NW., polyester millinery shops being built along Market Street NW., bricklayer’s union hall being built next door to Bethlehem Steel plant on Elm Street West between Lincoln Highway East & Market Street NW., large housing developments occurring around SE corner of Elm Street West & Market Street NW known as “The Stripes” – consisting mostly single family homesites with some 2-3 story buildings becoming popular among those living close by – becoming increasingly less common over time although still extant throughout most recent years thanks largely to donations/support from individuals or groups concerned about their long-term impact (& related issues such as gentrification). On November 3rd 1916 voters ratified an ordinance designating Old Town Township as Rural Municipality #2 with full powers under Pennsylvania Revised Statutes §135(a)(1) regarding election day proceedings therein if desired thereby providing for: Board Elections held every other year on November 3rd regardless of whether city officials attend or not; better transportation service available inside Township limits free from charge both ways between Township Hall Annexe & City Hall Annexe whenever possible so citizens can attend meetings etc.; authority granted hereinabove notwithstanding any conflicting laws or ordinances theretofore existing between Township governments thereof... This rural municipality arrangement lasted until 1965 when again township government was reinstated effective January 1st following incorporation into Historic District No 2 thru zoning changes made by building inspectors pursuant to federal law known as Emergency Planning & Community Development Act OF 1955 which mandate such changes for all townships over 100 dwellings). Today Old Town remains an vibrant community characterized by its mix of traditional English architecture with modern day amenities enjoyed by those visiting today or who have resided here since beforehand - something that cannot be said for much else within historic areas across PA during this recent period Of Rapid Urbanization!

Ephrata was founded in 1754 by Colonel George Washington and his regiment of light cavalry as log settlement on the Susquehanna River. In 1815 it became an incorporated borough. The borough was dissolved in 1886 and its land transferred to Huntingdon County for development into farms and villages. The first settler in what would become Ephrata was Captain John Tryon who arrived in 1754 with General William Howe's army during the North American Revolution. Tryon's farmstead stand on what is now State Route 6 south of present-day Ephrata began growing quickly and he soon erected a cabin there to provide shelter from winter weather and other challenges related to early America's land rush. Tryon also built a gristmill on the river which operated until about 1800 when disease made it necessary to close down operations due to waterlogging; however, this mill still stands today as one of only two remaining examples of its type operating in that area at that time. tryon's heir, John Tryon Jr., took over management of the mill after his father’s death in 1799 until 1816 when he sold it interest to Lorenzo de la Peña who ran it until 1862 when it closed because of financial difficulties brought about by changing industry patterns beyond what Tryon had imagined possible seventy years earlier! The mill has been restored several times since then including once as part of a larger project restoring most all aspects of an abandoned coal mine adjacent to the property! When Captain John Tryon first arrived settlers were faced with many struggles just getting started but eventually they managed to build some basic structures such as homes and outbuildings - something that still exists today within walking distance or reach through easy access roads! Even though these earliest pioneers faced many challenges building their own homes they did manage to start something important - their community! Eventually other settlers came and helped support Captains John Tryon Jr.'s successors - establishing businesses such as grocery stores, blacksmith shops, pharmacies etc... This business activity continued even after incorporation into borough status because people wanted their own space where they could live amd work without feeling like outsiders!-- something that still persists today within Walking distance or reach for all manner of needs/services! One particular aspect which set Ephrata apart during its early years were its excellent schools – not only did parents invest money into making sure their children received quality education but also society followed suit by providing good infrastructure (roads) so families could move around freely without worry! A large part of this success can be attributed backto Captain JohnTryone Sr.'s efforts being one man fighting against overwhelming odds while working tirelessly day & night long while others looked on sidelines & left things undone--something that continues unabated throughout our community today despite everyday challenges)!
