The town of Ephrata was named for General John Forbes, who commanded the First Brigade of Militia Regiment No. 3 in 1777 during the American Revolution. After America won its independence from Great Britain, General Forbes donated land to the United States government for a military academy and fortification system. In 1814, Congress authorized an army by order of President James K. Polk and General Andrew Jackson became the first commander in chief of our military forces; he ordered his regiment to move to Philadelphia to join up with other troops there. The U.S Army Garrison at Philadelphia included artillery units under command of Brigadier Generals Winfield Scott and George Meade until 1821 when they were transferred to Fort Mifflin near Harrisburg where they continued under operational control of Major-General Isaac Brockway until1829 when they were moved back downriver to Fort Mifflin again becoming operational controls for Major-General Nathaniel Granger; this arrangement continued until 1846 when all infantry batteries were placed within one brigade (1st Infantry Brigade) under Major-General Joseph Hooker commanding I Corps headquartered at Yorktown Heights which was located on territory claimed by both France and England as part Southeastern Pennsylvania following the Treaty of Paris ending World War 1; after the war all artillery units were disbanded except those serving as garrison guns at Fort Mifflin which manned by National Guardsmen until 1959 when those same troops assumed their current mission as part of 10th Mountain Division Combat Team

Ephrata is a town in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 9,527 at the 2010 census. The name comes from the Greek word ἔφρατα (ephraða), meaning "fruit" or "land". The community was founded in 1786 by John McMahon and his family as an outpost on the edge of what is now Lancaster County. By 1810, most of Ephrata had been laid out and named after General George Washington's headquarters at Mount Vernon. In 1814, when Andrew Mellon purchased 1/4 of township for $2,500, he renamed it Mellon Township because he owned much of the land thereabouts. Ephrata became a borough in 1876 and then a city in 1907. It has since reverted to a borough. On July 15th, 2020 it became the first municipality in Pennsylvania to become completely without internet service – with only GSM and CDMA coverage remaining!

Ephrata is a town in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 10,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The first permanent European residents of Ephrata were Dutch colonists who arrived in 1753 and built a small trading post on the Susquehanna River. A group of Englishmen from Lancaster visited the post in 1756 and again in 1760 but abandoned it because of Indian attacks on their settlements near Fort Duquesne. In 1764, John Forbes purchased the site from the Dutch and started to build a fortification called Forbes' Fort. By 1770, Forbes had replaced hisFort with a larger structure which became known as Forbes's Castle. In 1802, Pennsylvania acquired what are now Cumberland and Westmoreland counties from Maryland as part of its effort to become an all-American state. The new government decided that western Pennsylvania would be included within its boundaries and nominated James Kline as director of public lands to explore land for settlement in what is now Ephrata Township. Kline recommended that settlers move into areas that had been abandonment by previous occupants because those areas were rich with minerals such as coal and silver ore. He also felt that development could take place only if there was access to transportation through roads connecting eastern Pennsylvania with central Ohio or Virginia proper. Kline's recommendations led to establishment of the township by act of Congress on February 8, 1802; it was one of eight original townships created within Pennsylvanian territory during the Louisiana Purchase (1803). Lack of suitable land caused growth throughout most of eastcentral Pennsylvania until ceded property adjacent to present-day Ephrata Township was cleared for farming by virtue of military occupation during World War II when munitions production increased nearby at Mound City Arsenal Prison Camps No 2 & 3 on Monongahela River Valley between Uniontown and Hillsboro Township bordering Lebanon County; however much valuable agricultural land still remains undeveloped including around present day Ephrata Township center where most early settler homes still stand today thanks in large part to donations from descendants/friends/acquaintances/family members over many years!

In 1812, Ephrata was incorporated as a borough. The town experienced rapid growth during the 1800s and reached its peak in population in 1828 with over 10,000 residents. However, the economic downturn of the 1830s caused many families to move out of Ephrata and it quickly lost its status as a major commercial center. In 1847, Ephrata became part of the newly formed United States of America and experienced significant growth due to its incorporation into one of the country's most important states. Over time, however, Ephrata's economy began to decline and it has since fallen off the radar screen of Americans statewide.
