The shop was started by two friends, John and Peggy Cavanaugh, who were looking for a place to buy coffee beans and sell roasted coffee. They soon realized that they had something special on their hands and started making their own coffee. In the early 1900s, the first machine was invented that could roast whole beans. This machine made it easier for people to get their morning caffeine fix. Also in the early 1900s, Edwin Land purchased a small lot of land around where Emmaus now stands and built his first espresso plant. The land was used to grow sharecroppers' crops and produce espresso for local merchants. When World War I ended, many farmers got back into farming after the war ended. Some of these farmers decided to start up their own businesses selling coffee beans and other products from their farms. These new businesses became known as "coffee shops." In 1924, Joe's Coffee Shop opened its doors in Emmaus and quickly became one of the most popular coffee shops in town. Joe's is still open today as a family-owned business serving delicious cups of joe every day!
Emmaus is a small town in Butler County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,904 at the 2010 census. Emmaus is located on the eastern edge of Butler County and the southern border of Huntingdon County. It lies on Route 186, about 12 miles (19 km) north-northwest of Pittsburgh and 18 miles (29 km) west of Harrisburg. The town was founded by German colonists in 1795. It was named for Johann Friedrich Emmett, an officer in the British army who died during the French and Indian War in 1759. In 1796, John Adams came to Emmaus from Bethlehem Township and opened a store there. The first post office was established at Emmaus in 1800. Emmaus became a borough in 1834. In 1924, changes were made to village form within Butler County; this change eliminated all township status from Emmaus so that it became an unincorporated community once again. At the 2016 census, its population had fallen to 924 people (-2% since 2010). According to the United States Census Bureau, the community has a total area of , all land. As of the census of 2000, there were 1,752 people, 594 households, and 486 families residing in the community. The population density was 747 people per square mile (291/km²). There were 611 housing units at an average density of 291/sq mi (121/km²). The racial makeup of the community was 96% White European American; 2% African American; 0% Native American; 0% Asian; <1% Pacific Islander; 1% from other races; and 2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latinoof any race were 3%. A total of 594 households resided with unmarried partners living together as cohabitants: 98 married couples living together but not divorced (.84%); 54 single parents living with their children under 18 (.29%); 14 married couples without children (.20%). Of these unmarried partnerships, 45 had one child under 18living with them while 44 did not have any children.

Emmaus is a small town in Butler County, Pennsylvania. The population was 4,711 at the 2010 census. The name Emmaus comes from the German name "Emmasch", meaning "a little crossroads." The first place of worship in Emmaus was organized in 1793 and called the Methodist Episcopal Church. In 1815, the Presbyterian church was built and served as the town's commercial center until 1907 when a new courthouse and school were constructed. In 1881, John Nolen settled on a farm near Emmaus and began to raise chickens. He named his farm Emmasch after his daughter-in-law, Emmauser (née Nolen). After emigrating to America in 1847, Johann Friedrich Hühner discovered economic opportunity in livery services located along main roads that led into Pennsylvania from Maryland. In 1863 he founded Hühner Brothers Livery Company which became one of the leading horse transportation firms in Philadelphia until its sale to US Steel Corporation in 1966. The old school building still stands today as part of Germantown Township High School District #2B
