The community was founded in 1825 by George and Martha Emmaus, who were refugees from Germany. George Emmaus had been a Lutheran minister in Hesse-Nassau and when he and his wife moved to Bethlehem in 1824, they decided to establish a congregation here. In 1827, the Emmaus family donated land for a church on First Street which became the town's first church. The town's name was changed to Emmaus in honor of the family's adopted daughter. The population of Emmaus grew rapidly after it became an incorporated township in 1868. By 1900, the community had over 1,000 residents and itbaned discriminatory practices against Germans until 1933 when that practice was outlawed by the American Nazi Party (the precursor to neo-Nazis). After World War II ended, many emigrants from Europe returned to live in Emmaus while others established independent businesses and families remained here through the years. In 2013, Emaus was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site due its significance as "a peaceful religious center during difficult times".
