Emmaus, PA is home to one of the most well-known and respected coffeehouses in America. The Coffee House has been providing high quality coffee since 1892. With over a century of experience, the Coffee House has become an institution in Emmaus. The Coffee House began as a small grocery store on Main Street. In 1892, the first African American employee of the store, Mrs. Crampton, started serving customers black coffee. Over time, other employees joined Mrs. Crampton and their work became known as the “Coffee House Crew”. This crew provided delicious cup of Joe to local residents and tourists alike throughout Emmaus! In 1955, Donny & Marie opened the present day Coffee House on High Street in downtown Emmaus. They continue to serve delicious cup of Joe to locals and tourists alike today! Some of the first coffee beans to be roasted in Emmaus, Pennsylvania were brought over by Peter Witton in 1794. The town's first grocery store was opened in 1801 and its first shopkeeper, Nathan Phillips, operated it. In 1826, Dr. John Hogg purchased a farm called "Hoggs" and began to roast coffee there. By 1830, he had two shops in town with twenty-five employees! Today, Emmaus is home to more than sixty businesses that sell food and beverage products including several restaurants and cafes as well as a large number of specialty stores.
Emmaus, Pennsylvania is a small town in the United States located in Lackawanna County. It is named after Emmaus, an early German settler. The population was 3,488 at the 2010 census. The first settlers to arrive in what is now Emmaus were the Fuhrmans who arrived in 1814. They were followed by the Griggs family who settled in 1826. The community was officiallyxestablished on December 6, 1828 when a group of thirteen farmers and their families gathered at what is now Mill Creek Baptist Church to form a township. The name "Emmaus" was chosen because it sounded like "a very pretty girl." The first post office opened in October 1830 and operated for two months. In 1832, a sawmill and gristmill were built and quickly became important businesses for the community. By 1840, there were six stores, four churches, three schools and sixty-eight residents. During the American Civil War (1861-1865), many people from Emmaus enlisted in the Union army or volunteered to help out with the war effort. Many of these soldiers are buried at Arlington National Cemetery including General John A. Logan and Corporal Augustus Woodbury Emmons (the only African American soldier from Emmaus).

The town rapidly grew and became an important center for the coal industry. In 1847, Emmaus was named the capital of West Virginia after the state's creation. The capital moved to Richmond in 1875, but Emmaus remained its primary city until 1959 when it merged with nearby Allentown to form the current metropolitan area. The town has experienced many significant changes throughout its history. In 1792, George Washington and his family settled here after moving from Newport News, Virginia. They built a small cabin on the edge of what is now downtown Emmaus and started farming the land around it. Over time, they developed a strong agricultural community that contributed significantly to West Virginia's growth as a state. In 1847, when West Virginia was created, Emmaus became the capital of new westVirginia because Richmond was not yet ready to assume that role. However, even though Emmaus continued to serve asWest virginia's capital for many years, it eventually moved back to allentown when that city became more central within the state government. In 1959, both Allentown and Emmaus merged into one metropolitan area called "The Capital Region". This change helped create more jobs and increased economic development in both towns while increasing social mobility in both populations overall.Today, Emmaus remains an economically active community with thriving businesses and vibrant cultural scene
