Emmaus is a town in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 3,819 at the 2010 census. The Emmaus School District serves the town. The name "Emmaus" comes from the Hebrew word אֵמַעוּ (‘ĕmāwū), meaning "place of gathering". Emmaus is a small town located in Berks County, Pennsylvania. The population was 2,526 at the 2000 census. Emmaus is part of the Reading Township Micropolitan Statistical Area. The history of Emmaus begins with three families who settled in 1798 on a farmstead just east of what is now Emmaus. The first settler, John and Anna Heiman, had six children and one son died young. They named their farm after their father’s family name: Emmonsbury. In 1814, Isaac Decker bought the farm from John Heiman and moved his family to the property. His wife Hannah raised five children there: Abraham (1815-1902), Matthias (1817-1887), Soloman (1820-1890), Reuben (1822-1900) and Eliza Jane (born 1825). The Decker family became known as the “Emmaus7” due to their ownership of the land for seven years from 1814 to 1821 when it passed through brother Solomon’s death intestate to his widow Rebecca & her two daughters Sarah & Nancy Neely. On October 1, 1800 Samuel Fenton married Rebecca Neely in an outdoor wedding ceremony at which all 7 children were present including four sisters: Hester (1793-1872), Martha Jane(1795-1875), Julia Ann(1800-85) and Rachel Magdalen(1800-[10]) who later married George Washington Carver Jr., one of America's most noted scientists and agriculturists.
