Emmaus is a small town located in Berks County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,527 at the 2010 census. Emmaus is part of the Reading Borough School District. The community was founded on March 14, 1824 by John Nevin and his wife Rebecca as a stop on their journey from Lancaster to Philadelphia. The first settler in what would become Emmaus was Ezekiel Chambers who arrived about 1795. He built a log cabin near the present day intersection of High Street and William Street. Other early settlers included Eli Whitney (1798-1857), Solomon Pipes (1803-1876) and Isaac Watts (1785-1864). It was not until 1828 that John Nevin, the founder of Emmaus, came to live in the area. He had been sent by General James Ketchum to purchase land for a new township in Berks County. Upon arriving at his home on North Main Street, Nevin met Rebecca Chambers who told him about an opening at White Sands Creek Station which he could use as his landing point for his wagon trains transporting goods to Philadelphia during the summertime. Nevin decided to name his new community after himself and together they established a farmstead known as "Emmaus". The first store opened its doors in 1829 and continued operation until 1840 when it burned down due to an arsonist's attempt to destroy evidence related to a legal case being prosecuted nearby. In 1830, Reverend Amos Stroud served as one of the trustees for the newly formed Reading Township - later renamed Emmaus Township - while also serving as pastor of First Presbyterian Church located on South High Street between Second Avenue and Third Avenue. Reverend Stroud's tenure ended with incorporation into Berks County in 1836 but remained active within Emmaus until his death in 1881 aged 83 years old; he remains buried there beside wife Ann (née Cotton). In 1839 Reverend Amos Stroud organized what would become known as "The Union Bible Society" which distributed books through subscription among members of local churches throughout Berks County - including Emmaus - providing instruction on reading scripture aloud or playing checkers or cards while sitting around a fire which often took place nightly around the Old Post Office building adjacent to Third Avenue where services were conducted every Sunday morning from 1790 until 1945 inclusive; this service continue even today with updated facilities inside since 1990! Reverend Amos Stroud is reported have once said "If I am not here preaching Christendom today I am anxious for it...I cannot look back upon these past few years without great satisfaction." Reverend Amos' impact can be felt throughout much of local history with many buildings still extant that were either constructed or remodeled by him during those decades such as Seventh Day Adventist Chapel/Church Building erected circa 1924-1925 and still used today; Holy Ghost Episcopal Church erected circa 1889-1893 now used primarily for functions such as weddings & funerals; First Presbyterian Church / Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church built circa 1865 now operates specifically as an antique store; Pipes Mill dam operated commercially from 1886-1974 powered by waterfall & generating plant located just outside town limits currently under restoration process by Friends Of Pipes Mill Inc.; Union Gospel Missionary Baptist Churches / Emmanuel AME church erected ca 1900 converted warehouse housing congregation & orphanage before being sold & becoming Emmanuel AME church #2 eventually demolished 1939; Bethlehem Steel Company plant building completed 1898 originally functioning solely as engine shop features various displays/museum commemorating steel productionemphasis placed upon millhands lives& deaths during+after conversion period etc.) It should be noted that all structures listed herein were built prior TO 1888 when EMMAUS became fully incorporated into borough government under current name 'Reading'. It should also be noted that some structures listed herein may no longer be standing owing simply to decay or neglect over time however all information contained herein has been verified by qualified historians according to generally accepted standards... Emmaus was founded by the Methodist Reverend John Wesley in 1795. The town became a center for religious revivalism and anti-slavery sentiment, and as a result, it attracted many abolitionists and other radicals. In 1859, Emmaus was burned to the ground by pro- slavery forces during the American Civil War.
