The first coffee shop in Elizabethtown was opened by Italian immigrants in 1903. The Italian name, Il Mulino, means “the mill” and the shop served grinding coffee beans and iced coffee. In 1911, the owner of the grocery store built a small marketing building on Main Street and began selling coffee. By 1915, three other stores had opened and the business grew rapidly. In 1922, Mr. Izzo donated a building on Market Street for the new Coffee House which continued to serve as a popular spot for customers until 1978 when it closed its doors after 35 years of operation. In 1979, two friends from Elizabethtown decided to open their own café called Cupcakery which quickly became known for its creative cupcakes and excellent espresso drinks. The term “small batch” was introduced to this café by one of its founders who enjoyed drinking espresso made at home with fresh beans rather than using pre-made machines that often yielded poor results. Today, Cupcakery continues to serve delicious espresso drinks and delicious cupcakes!
