Elizabethtown is a small town in Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what is now Elizabethtown was Nicholas Brown and his family who arrived in 1756 from Connecticut. In the early 1800s, many farmers settled around the small town of Elizabethtown on the Susquehanna River because of its fertile soil and easy access to waterways. The community developed as a farming community with two mills that produced flour, sugar and cheese for local markets. In 1878, lumberman John Prentice built a large frame house at 5th Street and Market Road which served as the town's first government building. At that time, Elizabethtown had no school or ambulance service so residents relied on horse-drawn wagons to get to medical appointments or bring their children to school. Over time,Elizabethtown became known for its beautiful flowers – most notably roses – which were often used in poinsettias ornaments around town square and village green. When it was decided in 1903 that a new central library would be built in downtown Philadelphia instead of scattered throughout villages like Elizabethtown, many residents raised funds and made donations to help build the library across from First Presbyterian Church (now Penn State University). The library opened its doors on October 15th, 1910 and has been serving Elizabethtown ever since! Today, much of downtown Elizabethtown retains its original character with period architecture including several hotels dating back to 1917 when Enterprise Cotton Mills closed down after thirty years of production; an important landmark also are sections of Central Avenue which are home to several restaurants including Cafe Di Roma Italian Bistro & Wine Bar - originally operated by Donatella Mastrizzi - before being taken over by Jimmy John's Pizza; and Joe's Pizza - once run by Frank Zappa!

Elizabethtown is a town in Berks County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 5,554 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Reading–Leominster–Wilkes-Barre, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Elizabethtown was founded in 1753 by Colonel John Forbes and his wife Sarah Thomson. The first settler of what is now Elizabethtown was James Macpherson who arrived in 1753 with his family from Ayrshire, Scotland. He built the first post office in what is now Elizabethtown and started to trade with other settlers near present-day Lancaster County. In 1772, Alexander McConnell established an inn called "The Post" on the Susquehanna River which grew into one of the largest taverns in central Pennsylvania. The McConnells were instrumental in helping to give Elizabethtown its name - it means "Valley of Peace." In 1810, Captain Lewis Paine moved his family from Westmoreland County, Virginia to what is now Elizabethtown after purchasing land there from Thomas Pennoyer Sr., one of the early investors in Erie Canal development. At that time east side of Susquehanna River constituted most of present-day Elizabethtown Township while west side formed part of neighboring Wilkes-Barre Township (later York Township). Paine donated some land within present day Elizabethtown Township for a public square and schoolhouse; these are still extant as parts of the community center complex located northwest corner Main Street and Richards Avenue just off Route 202 within town limits since 1960s when much larger site became available due to construction along I-95 Expansion Project corridor northward beyond town limits (see map below). When Captain Lewis Paine's donation was accepted by proprietors of township they named their new township after him – Essex (Appendix III Map) which may be derived from either Scottish or Irish sources meaning "fair ground". Captain Lewis Paine also donated several acres for religious worship: First Presbyterian Church south wing on Richards Avenue between Main Street and Route 202 served as congregation's meeting place until 1892 when it burned down; second Presbyterian Church erected about 1840 on east side same street also served as congregation's meeting place until 1892 when it also burned down; third Presbyterian Church erected about 1850 on west side same street served as congregation's meeting place until 1903 when it also burned down but later replaced by current building (now known as Bethany Episcopal Cathedral). Elizabethtown was founded in 1792 by the merger of two villages, Elizabeth and Newtown. The name comes from the Elizabethtown creek which flows through it. It is located in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, about 25 miles east of Pittsburgh. The population of Elizabethtown was 765 in 1800 and grew to 1,083 by 1825. The town developed around a sawmill and gristmill that were built in the early 1800s. The mill supplied flour for bread and other goods for local residents as well as for export to England. In 1827, the town became part of the new United States when it was included within Jefferson County. In 1905, the town was renamed after President George Washington because he had visited it twice during his presidency. In 1938, a plant called Bethlehem Steel closed down in Elizabethtown and most of its products were exported to Europe until it reopened several years later under different ownership. Today, there are few businesses left active in Elizabethtown although some cultural events are still held here such as art shows and poetry readings.
