In 1907, the township was divided into two parts, Elizabethtown and Gettysburg Township. In 1950, both Elizabethtown Township and Gettysburg Township were annexed by Philadelphia County. Today,Elizabethtown is a census-designated place (CDP) within Philadelphia County. The history of Elizabethtown began with its incorporation as a borough on March 6, 1829. At that time it consisted of just four homes and twelve people. The borough's first mayor was John Geddes Smith Jr., who served until 1834 when he was replaced by James Cushman Kelly. A year later, on April 15th, 1830, the Borough changed its name to Elizabethtown Township after queen of England herself – becoming one of the first townships in Pennsylvania to do so! On November 3rd 1860 - after more than three centuries -the cornerstone for what would become known as "The Fortress"was laid at what is nowsquared off corner of Market Street & Third Avenue (now Elm Street).
