Elizabethtown is a town located in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 9,898 at the 2010 census. Elizabethtown is part of the York– Susquehanna Valley area and is bordered by York to the north, Lawrence County to the east, Lebanon County to the south, and Westmoreland County to the west. The first European settlers in what would become Elizabethtown were Native Americans who arrived around 1765. One group led by Captain John Smith settled near what is now called Elmira and founded a trading post named Fort William on November 20, 1765. The fort was destroyed in a fire in 1768. In 1779 Lieutenant Colonel George Washington established an artillery battery called Fort Necessity on land that had been purchased from Chief Weepuck (Lenape) for $1,500. In 1802 General Anthony Wayne's army burned down Fort Necessity after some Indian fighters prevented its completion. In 1812 Major General David Dixon assumed command of American forces during the Mexican War and ordered construction of a new fort at Elizabethtown which began on October 15th, 1812 under Lt.-Colonel Isaac Coffin's direction. By February 1st, 1813 it was completed and renamed Fort Erie after his old regiment – Company D of US Artillery stationed there until its disbandment in 1865. A second Battery (Captain Daniel Boone's) was also erected here between 1814-1816; but this battery too saw no service due to disease or garrison duty with Mexico until well into the 19th century when it finally surrendered at Monterrey December 21st 1800 having been held against all odds against them for 227 years! In 1861 Union troops invaded Maryland along with other states during The Civil War as part of General Robert E Lee's Southern campaign objectives including attacks on Philadelphia and Baltimore where over 50000 men died including 8000 Confederate soldiers at Camden Yards before they eventually withdrew back into Virginia leaving Baltimore unharmed despite Federal losses totaling nearly 60% of their force while Richmond lost more than 50%! It’s reported that over 4900 citizens were killed total within 12 months during both Baltimore & Philadelphia alone making these two cities one bloodbath compared to less than 100 fatalities each caused by any other hub city across America! As fate would have it bothBaltimore AND Philadelphia went up in flames just weeks later from arson committed by Confederate sympathizers mere miles away from Ft Erie!/ so much forredictability!!! In 1870 Mrs Jane Addams founded Hull House which became an international model for social work providing housing, clothing and education free to those who needed it most such as many working class women throughout North America!!& so much for “charitable” intentions!!! Today Hull House still provides charitable assistance worldwide! From 1860-1970 Elizabethtown averaged about 3200 refugees/migrants per year!!!!!! So not only did Mrs Addams help countless people she also helped start their own town thereby promoting tourism which has now become one of our lottsest exports!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Elizabethtown was founded in 1793 by the Pennsylvania Company, and became a town in 1802. The original population of Elizabethtown was ninety-six people. In 1828, the population of Elizabethtown reached one thousand five hundred people. The town's first hotel, the Queen's Head, was built in 1829. In 1840, Elizabethtown became the seat of government for Clearfield County. In 1848, Clearfield County was dissolved and merged into Blair County. In 1860, John Denny established Denny’s Mill in Elizabethtown. The mill ran for seventy years until it closed in 1960. Denny is credited with helping to start the steel industry in Elizabethtown. From 1860 to 1970,Elizabethtown had a total population of three thousand six hundred fifty-eight people; however, since 2000 the population has decreased by thirty-one percent due to migration and retirements. The most recent development in Elizabethtown is its new school system which opened on October 1st 2018; this system replaced the former Pembroke School System which closed down on September 30th 2017 due to budget cuts made by then Governor Tom Corbett (R). This new school system offers students a variety of programs that include arts and crafts classes as well as sciences and math courses along with English language classes which are essential for many high school students across America today who need help preparing for college or careers outside their home state/country
