The boats were later renamed Liberty and Victory respectively after those events occurred. Easton is a small town in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 7,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The township of Easton was organized on March 4, 1784, from parts of the townships of Bellefonte and Huntingdon. On December 12, 1824, it became a borough in the newly created city of Pittsburgh. The borough was annexed to the city on April 27, 1868. In 1892, Easton became one of three municipalities in Lancaster County that were designated as "model districts" for intelligent school children living near large cities (the others being Homestead and Sewickley). Residents there were required to attend schools in these "model districts". In 1916-17 negotiations began for an annexation by Easton to the City of Pittsburgh; but this annexation failed because Allegheny County refused to recognize any municipal boundaries within its own borders which did not coincide with those established by Model Districts. In 1933-34 work started on what would become known as "The Gorgas Dam", which would create Lake Erie beyond the city limits to provide irrigation water forPittsburgh and other surrounding municipalities. By 1937-38 nearly all residents within easton had left for good due to high taxes and lack of jobs in the steel industry during World War II (the war led also to increased competition among local businesses for government contracts). On October 3rd 1948 voters approved a referendum creating a new borough charter with voting precincts located eastward from downtown Pittsburgh across Point Breeze Avenue from Spring Hill High School where most people lived before they were annexed into the city proper by order of Mayor John Pittinger following a vote on November 5th 1947; however because no land lay contiguous between Point Breeze and downtown Pittsburghers could vote therein they only received 1/3rd their share proportional to their population size making them one half minority amongst all Allegheny County Municipalities forming today's City Of Pittsburgh while still being an unincorporated community reliant on services provided by both Municipal Governments
