Easton, Pennsylvania is a town in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, United States. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 11,898. The name "Easton" was given to the town by General David Dixon in 1795. Easton is located on the south shore of the Schuylkill River and is bordered by Easton Township on the east, Westmoreland Township on the west, and Lebanon Township on the north. It is also bordered by state lines to the east and west. The first settlers in what would become Easton arrived in 1795 and founded a small settlement around what is now known as Second Street. They were mostly farmers who grew corn, soybeans, wheat and other crops. In 1824, when Schuylkill County was created from portions of Berks County, Easton became one of its townships. The town's first store opened in 1827 and its first school opened in 1828. In 1896, when Pittsburgh was annexed into Philadelphia along with many other municipalities due to annexation laws passed at that time by President Grover Cleveland following his victory over Democrat James Kellar in an election held that year (known as the "Election of '96"), Easton became part of Philadelphia proper once again although it continued to use its own currency until 1912 when it switched to U.S. dollars completely
