Dunmore, Pennsylvania is a small town located in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania. The population was 3,711 at the 2010 census. Dunmore was founded in 1786 by John Dunmore and his wife Susanna White. It is named after Sir John Dunmore who fought in the American Revolution. The original mill on the banks of the Susquehanna River was built by John Dunmore in 1792. In 1815, it was bought by George Washington and used as a cavalry post during the Mexican-American War. In 1839, it became a stop on the Underground Railroad and played an important role in helping fugitive slaves escape to Canada. Today, DunMORE is home to several businesses including three large grocery stores and two restaurant chains as well as two high schools - Stroudsburg Area High School and Easton Area Senior High School - which serve students from all over Lehigh County. There are also several churches including Presbyterianism (congregational), Methodist Episcopal (Methodist), Roman Catholicism (Catholic), Lutheran (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints), Unitarian Universalist (Unitarian) and Baptist (Anglican).
Dunmore was founded in 1768 by James Dunmore, the third and last of the two sons of Colonel John Dunmore. The town grew quickly, and in 1783 it became a part of the United States. In 1815, it was renamed for General Andrew Jackson.
