Dunmore is a small town located in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 5,658 at the 2010 census. It is the home of Dunmore High School and the only high school in Lackawanna County. The first settlement in what would become Dunmore occurred on February 27, 1792 when John Forbes settled a land grant from the Crown for his brother Alexander Forbes. One year later, on May 25, 1793, James McGillivray and five other men established a trading post at what is now known as Dunmore Village. In 1802, Dunmore was incorporated as a borough under the name of "Lachemont". On January 1st 1803, Dunmore became part of the newly created state of Pennsylvania and its government changed to that of a township with a single councilmember elected by popular vote. In 1825-26 an act was passed by the General Assembly known as "An Act for establishing Schools" which provided for educational opportunities for poor children in various parts of PA (including Lackawanna County). After years of debate over whether or not to build schools there were finally two schools constructed: one in Lachemont (now called dunmorehomeschools dot org), and another in DunMORE Village – both open to girls until 1880 when boys were also allowed into those buildings. In 1868-69 Methodist Episcopal missionaries erected a chapel/schoolhouse near where present day Route 30 crosses Clear Creek just east of town limits – this building still stands today! The Panic Of 1893 hit hard here within weeks after Lehman Brothers went bankrupt causing many families to lose their jobs and homes. Unemployment soared reaching 50% by October 1893 according to one report; however it decreased remarkably following passage of an emergency appropriation bill that raised money through taxation instead. The site of Dunmore was first settled by Germans in 1798 and named "Hammersmith". The town was incorporated as a borough in 1802 and named after George Dunmore, 1st Baron Dunmore (1765-1827), a British statesman who served as Prime Minister of Great Britain from 1807 to 1812 and as Secretary at War from 1810 to 1814. In 1868, the town became the seat of Elk County when it was created from parts of Allegheny and Washington counties. In 1898, following the passage of the National Prohibition Act, alcohol production in Elk County ended. The population declined starting around World War II until it reached its current level in 1990.
