The Dunmore Volunteer Militia was organized in 1812 as a result of the Second Intelligencer's report that "the people of Dunmore, Susquehanna County, are determined to resist any military force that may be sent against them." The militia was first activated on November 10th, 1812 when five men were called up for service. The first real conflict with the British army occurred on December 14th, 1812 when a detachment from Dunmore's militia fought and defeated an expedition commanded by Major John Armstrong. After the victory at Newtown Creek, Armstrong ordered his forces back to Pennsylvania but six more men from Dunmore were called up on February 5th, 1813 to help garrison Fort Pitt. On March 16th, 1813, Armstrong again requested assistance from Dunmore and this time twenty-five men were called up for duty. However, no battle ensued and it is unknown why. On October 2nd,1814 two detachments of the militia accompanied Brigadier General James Wilkinson's brigade as it advanced towards Philadelphia during the Battle of Monmouth Junction. There was no engagement however Wilkinson claim that his troops encountered "a body of Indians" which caused him to retreat without further loss; this event is often considered one of the most successful engagements of the war. In 1815-1816 there was also a small skirmish between Indian and British forces near Shamokin but no significant action took place. By September 1816 all volunteer militias had been disbandedexcept for one detachment which continued operations until May 1800 under new name “Dunmore Riflemen” before finally disbanding completely in 1800s due to lack of volunteers or funding

In 1812, the Dunmore militia was mobilized to help protect the frontier from Native Americans. The militiamen were augmented by local civilians and volunteers. From 1814-1815, the militia patrolled the frontier and conducted campaigns against hostile Indians. In 1816, Dunmore became a town and in 1817, it was chartered as a borough. In 1861, Dunmore detachment of Pennsylvania Volunteers participated in the American Civil War as part of General George McClellan's army. In 1865, Dunmore detachment of Pennsylvania Volunteers fought at Moria Creek while under command of Colonel John Fenton. In 1870, Dunmore detachment of Pennsylvania Volunteers furnished men for participation in the Franco-Prussian War under command of Colonel Augustus Quesnel.
Dunmore is a small town in Perry County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 2,902 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The first settler in Dunmore Township was John Dunmore, who arrived in 1756. The township was organized on December 3, 1786. On November 15, 1800, a fire destroyed most of the village of Dunmore and all but 10 houses in the township; this event is generally considered to be the beginning of the present-day town. In 1801–1802 William Penn built "Carnegie Hall" in what is now Carnegie Library Square in Dunmore Township as a public building for concerts and other events. In 1809–1810 Daniel Cady built "the White House" west of what is now First Presbyterian Church (now Carrick Heights United Methodist). The initial buildings were used by state officials before becoming home to various businesses including an woolen yarn factory and two breweries before being abandoned for years until they were converted into housing developments in the early 1960s. In 1865 James Mifflin moved his printing press from Philadelphia to Dunmore after its owner went bankrupt; he erected the first print shop building there. Mifflin became known for his famous books such as "Uncle Tom's Cabin". In 1907 racism against African Americans began to increase due to increasing numbers of rural whites moving into urban areas; this led to Jim Crow laws being passed which discriminated against African Americans until passage of Racial Equality Act (1964) ended that discrimination permanently. The post office was established at Dunmore on July 1, 1825; it changed its name to La Grange on February 14, 1851 after granges had been abolished by state law that year. A school district was created from parts of Perry and Huntingdon counties in 1902; it merged with La Grange School District on October 1, 1923 when La Grange became an incorporated city status under Pennsylvania Statute 2112 ( dunMORE CITY ACT No 389).

Dunmore was founded in 1768 by James Dunmore, an Englishman. The town has a rich history that can be found throughout its area. One of the most significant events to occur in Dunmore occurred in 1828 when John Cranch, who had served as U.S. Senator from Kentucky since 1792, was elected as the first mayor of the town. At this time, Dunmore had a population of only 350 people and was relatively small compared to other Pennsylvania towns at the time. However, over time, Dunmore grew rapidly and became one of the largest communities in Pennsylvania. In 1859, the town annexed part of neighboring Clearfield Township and became one municipality with a total population of 3,700 residents. This annexation led to increased growth and development within the town due to twofold factors: First, it allowed for more economic opportunities; Second, it made it easier for people to get involved with local government because they were now physically located within their own municipality. Today, Dunmore is a thriving community with a diverse economy that includes various businesses and organizations such as schools, churches, hospitals and libraries. It is also home to many notable citizens including several governors and members of Congress who have resided in the town during their careers.
