In 1758, General George Washington founded a military post here to protect settlers from French forces during the French and Indian War. In 1806, when Pennsylvanian Andrew Mellon donated land to form what would become Dunmore Township, he also became its first treasurer. The township was named for him. After Mellon's death in 1868, it passed through several hands until it was purchased by attorney-general John Dickinson in 1896 for $1 million dollars ($102 million today). At that time, it became one of the most rural areas in Pennsylvania with over 54% of its population living within two miles (3 km) of a public school or playground! Since 1992, when The United States Congress passed legislation authorizing DOD to spend up to $100 million per year on gifting through A&S programs, there has been an increasing trend among agencies towards gifting within their own individual programs rather than waiting for NOAA or DHS to approve gifts. This trend has led to increased interactions between service branches as well as better coordination between services that can result in more efficient gifting endeavors.
