After the American Civil War ended in 1865, most of this area became part of the new United States federal district of West Virginia. Columbia was formally incorporated as a borough on February 15, 1898 by an act of the Pennsylvania Legislature under then-Governor John Fetterman. At that time it consisted of just over one square mile (0.6 km²). The municipal government changed hands several times until it became an unincorporated community on May 20, 1951 when its boundaries were shifted to include all but 330 acres (150 ha) surrounding Columbiana Creek which formed its core commercial and residential development and which had been exempted from incorporation because it lay within West Virginia's borders until then

The name "Columbia" originated from an Indian word meaning "place of peace." By 1865, there were 45 churches with 621 members living in Columbia. The population grew rapidly due to increased agricultural production and industrialization throughout much ofPennsylvania during this time period.
