Columbia is a small town in Columbia County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,829 at the 2010 census. It is part of the York–Fayette Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit what is now Columbia was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1565. He named it "Verrazano". In 1784, General George Washington and his army passed through the area on their way to Valley Forge during the American Revolution. In 1824, John Fetterman built a sawmill here that became one of the largest in the region. In 1865, Henry Clay corn cribs were erected here to support growing crops for local market demand; these remain today as evidence of early industry in this area. From 1868-1974, Columbia was home to Penn Central Railroad's Scranton Branch line which led from Scranton into eastern Pennsylvania and beyond to New York City and points westward. At its peak traffic on this line totaled more than 300 trains daily! During World War II (1939-1945), many businesses closed due to wartime rationing but some reopened after liberation when war ended. One such business was A&P grocery store which reopened after years of being closed because of fire codes related to gas warfare; it still stands today as one of Columbias most notable landmarks! Columbia also hosted two important events during this time: President Harry S Truman's speech at DeSales University on March 5th, 1945 and Mayor James J Lynch's inauguration on May 3rd with Congressman Joseph Welch presiding over both ceremonies!
