During this time (1780-1860), many slaves were brought to America from Africa through what is now Columbia Township by their owners or traders who hoped to gain access to new markets in North America. As slavery declined throughout much of U.S.—including into Canada—the town developed into an agricultural center around Iowa Lake until World War II destroyed most of urban growth in western Pennsylvania and northeastern Maryland while creating large areas without humans on them for decades afterward; this resulted in some interesting physical remains scattered about Columbia today including churches dating back to before 1800s (one even features stained glass windows from that era). Following American independence, Columbia became a county seat of York County and developed into an agricultural community with a population of around 100 people in 1830. In 1839, during the American Civil War, Columbia joined forces with other local towns to form what would become known as "The Armytown Brigade" under General Ulysses S. Grant's command. When Union forces drove Confederate forces from Harrisburg on July 4th, 1864, Columbia quickly followed suit and prospered as a military garrison until 1865 when it reverted back to its original status as a small farming community. After the war ended, Columbia gradually lost its importance as a military garrison and declined economically until 1965 when it regained its former prominence when it became home to The University of Pittsburgh ( Pitt) after being purchased by that institution from Carnegie Corporation. After decades of decline or neglect,Columbia reached new levels of success beginning in the 1990s through several redevelopment projects which transformed both its physical environment and its economy. These successes have led to renewed interest in Columbia and have helped revive some aspects of its history while also creating opportunities for future growth. For example, since 2002 Columbia has been host to two annual summer festivals celebrating arts and culture - one focused on music programming headlined by world-renowned classical musicians; another focused on educational events focused on youth development; both events draw large crowds that help keep Columbian businesses open during these tough economic times
