Columbia is a small town in the Lehigh Valley of Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 2,026 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Allentown-Easton-Middletown, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Columbia area was first settled by English colonists in 1681 as a trading post on the Susquehanna River. The name "Columbia" comes from an Indian word meaning "place where trees grow." The original settlers were Baptists and they named their community after John Colleton, one of their early missionaries to America. In 1797, when Pennsylvania became a state, Columbia became part of Adams County and remained so until 1861 when it became part of Lehigh County. The Columbia Coal Company was founded in 1859 and leased coal mines in central Pennsylvania from various mining companies until its dissolution in 1925. At its peak production, Columbian Coal had operations at six mines site including two main collieries: Yorktown (north) and Yorktown II (south). Mine operators included J E Beattie & Son Ltd., Geo Waddingtons Sons Ltd., H M Richardson & Co., Wm F Denning Bros., P C McConnell & Sons, Maurice Pfister & Sons and other smaller firms. In 1865 while working for his brother-in-law George Washington Carver at a local farm known as Monroe Hill near Monroeville, PA Carver discovered large amounts of anthracite coal there which he shipped back to Philadelphia for shipment to New England mills because anthracite coal was then the most important type of coal available on American shores. After much research into this new discovery by himself and others at his farm carver developed what would become known as Penn Central Railroad's Anthracite Coal business model which involved leasing land adjacent to existing mine workings with hopes that future production could be subsidized by government ownership or concessionary agreements with competing mine operators making additional payments annually into anAnthracite Coal Development Authority Trust Fund managed by trustees who also operated several industrial plants used for both upholstery tanning and other manufacturing processes related to anthracite coal production during this time period including Lackawanna Iron Workshops (later Lackawanna Coke Works), Bethlehem Steel Company's blast furnace plant No 5 (now Exelon Nuclear Plant), Armstrong World Industries' steel mill complex at Jerome Township near Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (now AlcoaCoal Products Inc.), Bethlehem Steel company's foundry complex near Northumberland Township between Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and Homestead also now AlcoaCoal Products Inc.) Today these sites are part of Goodyear Blister Tire Plant located just outside Yorktown borough limits on Route 910 about five miles east of Interstate 95 Exit 26A off I-95 southbound). less

Columbia, Pennsylvania is a town in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 5,648 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous municipality in Bucks County and part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. The first European settlers arrived in what is now Columbia Township on October 14, 1753 when Captain John Smith's group of English colonists landed on an island in present-day Cumberland River. Settlers built their first cabin by the falls of the Susquehanna River in 1754. In 1759, Captain John Armstrong founded Armstrong's Mills on what is now Market Street and High Street. In 1814, Columbia Township was created from parts of Butler and Lancaster townships following the Union ofPennsylvania with Maryland as its new state capital. The township was named for James Kempton Columbian School District (now York) which had been established two years earlier to serve students in that part of Pennsylvania west of Philadelphia. In 1868, Washington College opened a school atqua downriver from where it still stands today near what is now Columbia Pike/Route 685 north of central Parktown Township; this school served students until 1942 when it closed due to lack of funding and conversion to apartments. In 1906, Penn State University moved into facilities northeast of Whitehall after purchasing land east of Chambersburg between Bethlehem Road and West Branch Road from Delaware Valley Railroad Company In 1916 Columbia lost its status as an independent borough withinPhiladelphia because it joined with other municipalities within Philadelphia to form "The Boroughs" under then-Mayor Joseph Laughlin as part of a campaign promise made during his election victory over Benjamin Franklin Levy Jr.. As part of this effort to consolidate city services into one entity through local governing authorities there were some changes made to City Hall including the addition of a four-story rotunda with an open air plaza facing Broad Street which became known as "the plaza." This building remained unchanged until Mayor Ed Rendell tore down it in 1990 while seeking money for renovations which included adding underground parking garage capacity increasing streetlights throughout the complex and creating new public libraries within walking distance ( these libraries are still extant). On February 11th 1895 Columbiana Charter No XI was granted by Act No 7389 by Governor William McKinley with full approval by both houses Of The General Assembly having passed without opposition giving Columbiana Municipal Government her full powers similar thereto Granted By: WILLIAM MACKINLEY President OF THE UNITED STATES On this day Columbiana became Municipality subject To: THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA uniting With All Other Authorities therein concurring
The town of Columbia, Pennsylvania was founded in 1795 by the brothers Isaac and Jacob Cartwright. The town's first settler, John Beeston, arrived in 1796. In 1812, the town was incorporated as a borough. Columbia experienced significant growth beginning in the late 1800s due to its location at the intersection of two major railroads: the Susquehanna Railroad and the Penn Central Railroad. In 1910, Columbia became one of twelve townships statewide that were created from parts of Lancaster County. In 1915, Columbia was merged into the larger township of Lancaster.
