Columbia, PA is a small town located in the Allegheny Mountains of Pennsylvania. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. Columbia is part of the Harrisburg-Carlisle metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1781 by John Forbes and his brother-in-law David Hunter. The two brothers set about building a new settlement on a hill overlooking the Susquehanna River. The name Columbia came from the location and was chosen to honor James Mercer, an American Revolutionary War Soldier and future U.S. Senator from Pennsylvania who had helped found Harrisburg in 1784. According to historical accounts, early settlers were farmers with some land holdings but much of what is now Columbia was purchased by General George Washington during his military campaigns in the late 18th century for use as permanent military posts including Fort Necessity near present day Uniontown and Fort Mifflin near present day Wilkesboro. In 1826, when Columbia became part of McKeesport Township, it grew rapidly due to sections of canal connecting it with nearby Pittsburgh through what is now Monroeville Township and Westmoreland County. In 1828, incorporation as a village occurred; incorporated residents numbered 357 in 1840 and 471 in 1860. By 1870, when its population reached 2,250, Columbia had become one of McKeesport's leading commercial centres with Manufacturing plants along three main thoroughfares - Atwood Avenue (now Cameron Road), High Street (now University Boulevard) and Third Avenue (now 7th Street). The village achieved national attention when on September 15th 1876 Congress passed an act authorizing President Rutherford B Hayes to award Congressional Gold Medals at a public ceremony at Madison Square Garden; this event marked the end of Reconstruction era America which followed up Reconstruction policies enacted under President Andrew Johnson that aimed to reintegrate African Americans into society while preserving white supremacy throughout most southern states following their civil rights insurrection known as The Black Bottom Revolt
