The area around Columbia, Pennsylvania was first settled by the Pennsylvanian Native Americans in the early 17th century. The Dutch also came to this area in the early 17th century and built a small trading post on the Susquehanna River. In 1692, General John Forbes of Scotland erected a Fort Niagara at what is now Columbia, Pennsylvania after his successful campaign against the English in North America. In 1812, United States troops under General Winfield Scott fought against General Andrew Jackson during the War of 1812 at Columbia Station. After the war, many settlers moved into this area and founded various small towns and villages throughout central West Virginia and southwestern Pennsylvania. In 1861, when Union forces began their Civil War campaigns against Confederate armies across America, Union General Ulysses S. Grant attacked Confederate forces at Harpers Ferry near Lexington, Kentucky. This event is often referred to as “the Battle of Gettysburg” because Union soldiers successfully burned down Confederate cannons that had been used as cover during their attack. After the battle, many Confederate soldiers retreated back towards Maryland while some others continued fighting with Union forces in what is known as “the retreat from Harper’s Ferry” or “the surrender of Harper’s Ferry". Many civilians were killed or wounded during this battle including seven children who were playing near where today's town ofColumbia stands
