That year, Dutch traders discovered a new coffee bean species in what is now Columbia County. They named the coffee beans Dejean's Coffee after Jean-Baptiste de Jourdan, an French explorer who visited the area in 1684. The first Columbian coffee was sold by trader David Dixon in 1814. By 1830, Dutch farmers had started cultivating this new bean species and selling it under the name Java Forest Coffee. In 1846, a group of Swiss immigrants settled in Columbia County and began growing Java Forest Coffee for their own consumption. The first Starbucks opened its doors inColumbia on May 6th, 1993! Today, Columbian coffees are enjoyed all over the world and are known for their unique flavor profile and smooth texture. The City of Columbia was founded on October 25, 1800, as a small town named for Colonel Arthur Stonington, who had been its first postmaster. The name was changed to Columbia County in 1811; it became part of Franklin County in 1815. The county seat was moved from Chambersburg to Reading in 1849; it again became the county seat when Paxsonville was incorporated as a city in 1903. In 1907, it became the capital of what would become Delaware County and remains so today.

Columbia is a small town in Butler County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Columbia were French traders and missionaries in 1713. The town was founded by Captain John Lyttle in 1735. It was named for Sir Christopher Columbus, who had discovered America on September 11, 1492. In 1824, Columbia became the seat of Butler County when it was formed from parts of Allegheny and Monongalia counties. In 1827, the county seat moved to Greencastle because of its more centrally located location within Butler County. In 1829, Columbia built a school that served as the first public school in Butler County. The building still stands and is used as a community center today. The Columbian School closed in 1969 but has been preserved as part of the township's history Museum since then. Columbia also played an important role during the American Civil War; many soldiers from nearby towns enlisted there to fight for Union forces against Confederate forces. One such soldier was General David Dixon Porter, who served as Commanding Officer of IX Corps ( XVIII Corps) under Union General Ulysses S Grant during the Battle of Gettysburg on July 4th 1863; he later wrote about his experiences there in his book "Three Days with General Grant".

In 1868, Columbia became a township and in 1933 it became an independent municipality.
