The National Guard in Coatesville, Pennsylvania gift history began on October 1, 1881 with the activation of the first National Guard unit in the area. The unit was called Company H of the 2nd Regiment of Indiana Volunteer Infantry. Company H was activated at Coatesville by order of Governor John Fetterman and consisted of local men from town and surrounding areas who had volunteered to serve in military service. The company served as a guard until it was disbanded on December 12, 1881. In 1917, the Third Regiment of Pennsylvania Volunteers (also known as the "Blue Jay" Regiment) was activated in Coatesville and served for two years. Company C of this regiment donated three rifles to Company H which were used to form Company E. This company also served as battalion Headquarters for two years before being disbanded on September 30, 1919.
Coatesville is a small town in York County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,547 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Altoona-Johnstown-Allentown Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area around Coatesville was first settled by English colonists in 1681. In 1753, George Washington and his army passed through the town on their way to battle at Princeton. The town was founded in 1825 by James Coates Sr., an American Revolutionary War veteran and colonel in the Continental Army. When surveyed for a post office, Coatesville opted for its name instead of Blairtown because it sounded more like home (Blairtown had been chosen for its location). The first postmaster was Nathaniel Lyon. In 1868, when section 21 of York County were created, Coatesville became one of its six townships; the other five being Blairtown, Blairsburg, Bradford Heights, Lackawanna Junction and Uniontown Township. In 1876–77, William McKinley was elected president and large numbers of Italians immigrated to America during his term; many believe that this contributed to Unitas' victory over McKinley in November 1896 which led to Italian exclusion from America's political mainstream until after World War II. During World War II much work took place in nearby Monmouth Junction as millions of men left for war all over Europe with little notice given locally about what would happen back home; many American soldiers returninghome found their families living below poverty lines while they were incarcerated or working on farms abroad without pay coming back home until well into their sixties or seventies before any sort of relief came through federal programs such asPresident Roosevelt's New Deal which began Operation Homecoming in 1944 followed by President Truman's Marshall Plan which provided massive cash assistance to various countries up until 1970s when covenants were made not to give any money directly back again so local businesses could maintain some degree of competitive advantage against foreign competition Today there are several small businesses that continue providing services including: agriculture/farming (mainly wheat and corn), health & personal care services (including hearing aids & vision treatments), manufacturing (mid-sized autos & motorcycles), transportation (bus service only within Altoona community) as well as restaurants/cafes/bars dotting the small town center along with several independent stores . The Guard eventually became an all-volunteer force, and by 1907 it had 1 million soldiers and civilians under its command. In 1933, the National Guard was placed under the jurisdiction of the Department of Defense, and in 1947 it was merged into the Army. Today, the National Guard provides more than 350,000guardsmen and women across the United States to support military missions or events. In 1795, Coatesville was founded by James and Deborah Coates. The couple named their town after their father, who had died in 1780. At the time, the area was part of what is now West Virginia. James and Deborah were among the first white people to settle in this area. They started a small farm with six acres of land. The couple soon became successful and built a home that still stands today. The Coatesvilles were not the only ones to come to Coatesville over time. Others who made an impact on the community include Johnnie Walker, who owned a grocery store here from 1919 to 1926; Will Hays, the founder of Whetstone Coal Company; and Roy Wilkins, the first black man to win election as Mayor of Philadelphia in 1974. Coatesville has experienced many ups and downs over its history. However, it always retains its proud history and remains one of Pennsylvania's most popular communities for families living close by.
Coatesville is a borough in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 2,567 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The first community in what is now Coatesville was established by Benjamin and Rebecca Coates on May 10, 1795. They named their new settlement after General George Washington and his army who had passed through that region earlier that year. The town site was about two miles east of present-day Conshohocken Township and one mile west of present-day Altoona. By 1800, the town had an estimated population of 507 people. In 1814, Captain John Smith built a small cabin near today's intersection of State Route 309 and Prieststown Road to serve as a post office. In 1821, the name "Coatesville" was taken from General James Hays' headquarters in Tennessee when he moved his command to Cumberland County to take up command of the Department of Alabama during the Mexican–American War (1846-48). He also took possession of some land north of where Coatesville now stands in order to build his future home there. The first store opened in 1824 and prospered until 1830 when it burned down due to fire set by local farmersomer piñon miners who were looking for new land to mine coal on; this event marks the beginning of modern day Coatesville development. In 1828, Isaac Milner built a frame house on what is now Main Street which served as the first schoolhouse in what would become Coate's Village (later renamed Conshohocken Elementary School). Classes began September 4th that year with 30 students under instruction from male teachers Mr. Gorman and Mrs Laughlin who taught reading/math/science while living on their farm 3 miles away; by 1850 they operated 4 schools with 150 students each! In 1830 Judge Elijah Biddle erected a small courthouse which later became known as Biddle Middle School; it housed a jail at its peak but no longer exists today due to damage caused by recent weather conditions including HurricaneEdison played havoc with parts OF building over time: Today’s PSALD building houses administration offices for both Conshohocken Borough & Altoona Borough! Judge Biddle also donated land adjacent West Penn Avenue for future use as roads & civic center! . . . After years(?) Of being abandoned or left unused most residents simply vacated buildings during prohibition because lot lines changed hands frequently causing many homes & businesses to close up shop overnight!
