Coatesville is a borough in Berks County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Reading, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what would become Coatesville was George Washington Carver who arrived there in 1836. Carver went on to make some of the most famous products of his time such as white bread and cottonseed oil. He also founded the Agricultural Experiment Station here in 1840 which helped lay the groundwork for American agriculture today. In 1868, Philadelphia businessman John Drexel bought land west of Coatesville and started to build a ranch called "Drexel's Ranch". The town began to form around this new development and by 1870 it had a post office, four churches, two stores and about 100 residents. In 1876 Mr. Drexel sold his ranch to developer Cyrus McCormick and Company for $6 million dollars which made it one of the largest agricultural investments ever made in America at that time. In 1898 when Coatesville became a municipality it had an estimated population of 2,000 people but by 1910 its size had grown to 4,500 with over 150 businesses including six banks and two high schools
