In 1824, a group of men from Coatesville, Pennsylvania founded the first coffee shop in the area. The shop was called "The Roaster" and it served coffee until about 1830. In 1836, John A. Roasters opened a second coffee shop in Coatesville which is still in operation today. The original roasters were: John A. Roaster & Sons (1836-present), The Bros.' Coffee Company (1850-1910), and Horseshoe Coffee Company (1860-1920). Coatesville's coffee history began with two small roasting houses that served their customer's needs for cup of Joe until 1830 when the first store opened in town. This was followed by another store on Court Street in 1850 before finally opening up on Market Street in 1910 as Horseshoe Coffee Company. These three businesses helped to bring roasted beans to Coatesville and continue its rich coffee history!

The town was founded in 1798 by John Coates and his wife Sally. They named it for Benjamin Franklin, who had been their guest at their home during a visit to Butler County. The first post office in Coatesville was established in 1800. The Coatesvilles were among the earliest settlers of what would become Butler County. They came from North Carolina and built a log cabin on the banks of the Susquehanna River overlooking Catoctin Creek. In 1819, they erected a gristmill on Catoctin Creek that still stands today and became one of the most prominent landowners in the community. John Coates died in 1828 and Sally continued to live here with her three children until her death in 1868. Benjamine Franklin died here two years later at age ninety-eight after a long life spent working on behalf of his brothers and sisters across America as well as England and Wales...his remains are interred at Spring Hill Cemetery near Philadelphia." The Borough of Coatesville dissolved on March 15, 1974, when it merged with the city of Butler to form the current city of Butler. The John A. Coates House is located at 6100 South 2nd Street in Coatesville and is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places as part of the John A. Coates Historic District. Other notable landmarks include: Stroudsburg University's Dickinson Campus (now called "Stroudsburg State University"), which was built between 1909-1911; and White Hall School (now called "Whitehall Elementary School").
