Coatesville is a small, unincorporated community in Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is located on the banks of the Susquehanna River. The population was 511 at the 2010 census. The first settler in what is now Coatesville was John A. Coates who arrived on November 25, 1824 from Norwich, England with his family. He and his family erected a log cabin on a bluff overlooking the Susquehanna River. John A. and his son James (1827-1910) also built another log cabin nearby on what is now known as "Old Coatesville Road." In 1829, they married Sarah Jane Browning and moved to their present location where they raised six children: John A."Jr.," James," George," Martha," Solomon"and two daughters named Maynard and Nettie." The town of Coatesville was organized on October 7, 1830 by vote of its citizens under the name of "Covington". The name has been changed several times over its history but it has always been considered to be associated with John A., Sr., James G., Jr., Sarah Jane Browning and their six children
