Chester is a small town in the Lehigh Valley of Pennsylvania, located about 20 miles east of Philadelphia. It has a population of about 55,000 people and is the county seat for Lebanon County. Chester was founded in 1755 by George Washington and was named after his friend, Chesterfield in England. The first store in Chester opened its doors on December 5, 1755. The town's growth was rapid from the early 1800s until the late 1800s when manufacturing began to decline throughout the United States. In 1892, the city annexation of neighboring Bethlehem increased Chester's population by 10%. Today, it remains an agricultural and rural community with a largely white population. The history of Chester begins with George Washington and his friends who settled there in 1755. They were looking for a place to retire after leading successful military campaigns against Native Americans during the French and Indian War (1754-1763). Washington named the town after his friend Cheshire in England which he had met while attending college at William & Mary University (now Williams College). By 1800, some 30 stores were operating in what is now downtown Chester. At that time, most businesses were small farmers' shops that sold goods such as flour, milk, eggs, butter and other farm products. Although manufacturing shifted into larger cities during this time period due to technological advancements such as transportation improvements such as railroads and canal systems – including those built through Delaware County – farming remained an important part of local life with many families still living on their farms up until World War II when they transitioned into small-town residents again. During World War II much of eastern Pennsylvania sufferedbombing damage; much damage was done to downtowns such as Chesters original building which burned down on October 12th 1945; however generally only rural areas suffered significant destruction due to Allied bombing raids targeting industrial plants and ammunition production centers across eastern PA during World War II. Many large buildings from this era have been preserved including: First Presbyterian Church - which served as both a social hall for locals who gathered for dances given by civic organizations like ladies auxiliary or Rotary clubs before services or state parades held at nearby Independence Hall; Second Baptist Church - one of two remaining Gothic Revival churches standing today within walking distance from each other across Market Street from former textile factory complex where these churches once stood side-by-side; Third Presbyterian Church - designed by architect John Roethlisberger ; main entrance still visible on Market Street just past current day Subway restaurant complex next door serving primarily Polish/Eastern European customers – all structures damaged or destroyed following WWII bombings but remain listed on National Register Of Historic Places listings under category “Large Post-War Housing complexes” Today Downtown Chester contains several large multi-story warehouses used for storage purposes beginning around 1960 when Interstate 95 became traveling Route 66 passing through town center concurrent with I-95 bringing more traffic onto Main Street making it difficult if not impossible to walk any distances inside or outside downtown since streets leading away from I-95 are six blocks long! These days you can find open fields between buildings along Main Street….or you can take public transportation provided by Penn Central Railroad service except for November thru March when bus service is intermittent because tracks running parallel form I-95 keep moving even though no buses are currently available…and then finally you can purchase groceries at least 3 blocks away from any major intersection north Richland Avenue Nw corner Chestnut St continuing east until reaching US 21W outside city limits! Both grocery stores are very large chain stores unable to operate independently without massive subsidies so here’s hoping their recent merger will help improve customer service!

Chester, Pennsylvania is located in the southeastern corner of Pennsylvania, just east of the Ohio River. It was first settled by English colonists in 1682. The name Chester comes from the Celtic word Chestera meaning “place where cattle are pastured”. The town has been continuously inhabited since that time and is now a part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The first settlers in Chester were farmers who arrived in 1682. They grew corn, beans, wheat and other crops and built tanneries to make leather goods. Over time, the town developed into a small city with several stores and businesses. In 1823, it became a borough and was renamed Chesterfield Township after James Chesterfield, an American Revolutionary War hero who fought for Philadelphia. In 1868, Chester Union High School (now known as Southwestern) was founded in downtown by students from local high schools. In 1916, the city annexed adjacent towns of Monroeville and Parkland to form what is now known as Allegheny County. The annexation caused some tension between the two cities but ultimately helped grow both populations and economies within their respective boundaries. In 1975, when Pennsylvanian communities joined together to form the Susquehanna River Valley Development Authority (SRVDA), Chester became one of its members along with Johnstown and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. This development authority had responsibility for developing abandoned or uneconomical areas within SRVDA's boundaries which then could be used for commercial or housing development
Chester was founded in 1795 by James Chester, a Revolutionary War veteran and landowner. The town was named for General Chester (1724-1814), one of the main participants in the American Revolution. In 1803, the town became a borough and it has since grown to include over 60 neighborhoods. The city of Philadelphia annexed Chester in 1898.
