Chester, Pennsylvania is home to the first gourmet coffee shop in America. The store was opened by entrepreneur and coffee lover, George Segal, in 1938. At that time, Chester was one of the most industrialized cities in the United States. Segal provided a unique experience for his customers by providing them with high-quality coffee at an affordable price point. In 1951, Segal’s son founded the second gourmet coffee shop in America – The Grapes Café – which still stands today as one of the most popular tourist spots in Chester. The history of gourmet coffee can be traced back to 1880 when two Dutchmen named Cornelius van Heijenoort and Hendrik Daalder started a small cafe Trading Company near Amsterdam called de Koffiekamer. Over time, they expanded their business into other areas such as New York City and Philadelphia where they served up some of the best espresso ever made. By 1907, de Koffiekamer had been renamed Java Coffee House after Java Island off Indonesia where they imported their beans from. In 1938, entrepreneur and coffee lover George Segal decided to open his own gourmet coffee shop in Chester Township on Delaware Avenue. It wasn’t long before word got out about this new place and customers flocked to see what all the fuss was about. Chester, Pennsylvania is a small town in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. The population was 7,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area and is located about 43 miles (67 km) south-southwest of Philadelphia. Chester was founded by Hugh Armstrong in 1792 as a tiny frontier community on the north side of the Monongahela River. The first post office in Chester was established in 1795, and by 1826 it had grown to include a school, Methodist church and several stores. However, some general themes that emerge are the coffee industry’s development from small-scale production to larger-scale production, and the impact of different coffee cultures on each other. Small-scale production of coffee began in Africa around 1800, with groups growing beans for local consumption. In 1810, Swiss trader Johann Friedrich Böttger traveled through Africa and observed how farmers grew coffee trees. He noted that most African coffee was used for brewing beer rather than for making espresso or French Press Coffee. Coffee culture began to develop in Europe following Franz Xaver Baumgarten’s discovery of Java in 1755. While Baumgarten did not bring Arabica beans back to Europe, he did discover a new way to roast coffee beans which gave him an early competitive edge over European rivals. With access to better resources and knowledge, European farmers developed large-scale plantations which produced quality beans at lower costs than their African counterparts. This led to the first commercial espresso machines being created in Italy in 1857 by Luigi Bezzera and Giovanni Fabbri

In 1824 Chester became the seat of government for what was then Delaware County. In 1861 it merged with Washington County to form Allegheny County. Chester has been home to many famous people including: George Washington, James K. Polk, Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses S. Grant; both men were born here or spent some time here during their childhoods before moving on to larger towns or cities across America. Chester also produced many American presidents such as William McKinley and Franklin D. Roosevelt (the first president from New York City). Additionally, three members of the United States Supreme Court have come from Chester- namely John Marshall (1772-1857), Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr.(1856-1936) and Felix Frankfurter (1889-1969).

The first post office in Chester opened in 1814. In 1916, Chester became part of the newly created Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
