The name "Chester" derives from an English place name meaning "the crossing". The first settlers in what is now Chester Township were people who emigrated from England in 1684. In 1702, a grant of land was made to John Kieft by King George II for his services as a Scoutmaster and Commander of British forces during the French and Indian War (1763-67). This grant provided fertile ground for growth because it lay on both sides of a creek that served as an important transportation route between Philadelphia and Yorktown. In 1815, when Pennsylvania became a state, Lancaster County was split off from Chester County. As part of this change, the township was divided into two parts: one part went to Lancaster and the other went to Westmoreland Counties. The township has been continuously inhabited since then and still retains its cultural attributes today such as its medieval architecture and folk music styles indigenous to these regions. The apple orchard that sits atop Mount Allison overlooks much of what Chester has to offer tourists today; however, back then apples were only beginning to become popular here in America due to their high quality and tart flavor which set them apart from most European fruits. Chester is home to the historic Lock Haven Arsenal and a number of other historical sites. It has also been called "The Cotton Capital of America." Chester was founded by George Washington in 1795 as a small trading post on the Susquehanna River. In 1814, it became the county seat of Beaver County. The city was named after Chesterfield in England because of its rich cotton fields and abundant timber resources. The first settler in what is now Chester was John McNulty in 1796. By 1800, there were over 100 people living in Chester. In 1825, the Erie Canal was completed through town and Chester quickly became an important transportation hub for goods moving westward from Canonsburg and Easton throughout Pennsylvania and Maryland. This growth led to increased development around Lock Haven Arsenal which opened in 1828 – one of the earliest arsenals in America. From here, engineers developed new methods for creating munitions including locomotive-powered artillery that destroyed enemy fortifications during World War I and World War II; this work helped makeLock Haven one of America's leading military complexes during those wars). During these same years, many other businesses sprang up around town such as Wernher & Henschel (the first privately owned dry cleaning business) and Jardine Bros., makers of jute sacks (used for padding ground troops' feet during war). In 1905, when Pittsburgh annexed much of Westmoreland County to form Towson Township, Chester lost its status as a borough and became an unincorporated community within Towson Township. In 1960, following years of growth in western Pennsylvania due to opening of Interstate 81 and other development patterns across that region, Chester's zoning laws were changed so that it could accommodate this growth more easily than other municipalities within its boundaries. This change led to rapid development in downtown areas such as Market Square and North Street while leaving older neighborhoods largely unchanged for decades until recent gentrification efforts have started to reverse this trend
