The United States Air Force has long been a significant presence in Chester, Pennsylvania. The military service has played an important role in the community since World War II. The USAF has deployed forces to many locations in the state, including Cherry Hill and West Chester. The first air force deployment to Chester occurred during World War II. The United States Air Force arrived in Chester on December 6, 1942, after being sent from bases in New York City and California. At that time, the service was known as theAAF. It served as a convoy escort for bombers flying over Europe. In 1948, when the USAF became a separate branch of the armed services, it activated its 1st Tactical Fighter Wing at Willow Grove Airport near Philadelphia. This wing was responsible for providing fighter aircraft and training pilots for Combat Observer/Attack Squadrons ( COAS) conducting combat missions against communist targets inside Vietnam. Since its inception, the 1st TFW has flown more than 4 thousand missions throughout Southeast Asia supporting Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. In 2013-14 alone, members of this wing made 403 flights!

Chester, Pennsylvania is a town located in York County, Pennsylvania. The population was 4,898 at the 2010 census. Chester is home to the Chester Zoo and the Johnstown Flood Museum. Chester was founded by white settlers in 1795. The first post office in Chester was established in 1800. In 1825, the first bridge over the Susquehanna River was built.The town of Chester became part of York County when it was created from parts of Lancaster and Berks counties on January 1, 1837. In 1865, two brothers named George and Jesse Carpenter started a flour mill in what is now known as Old Bridge Township which would later become known as Chester. The Carpenter Brothers were also responsible for starting many other businesses such as a shoemaker, feed store and wagon shop before their death in 1925. One of their sons continued running the business until his death in 1970s. The Johnstown Flood occurred on November 15th 1913 when heavy rains caused flooding throughout much of central PA and southeastern Ohio affecting more than 20 counties including Philadelphia and Altoona/Johnstown neighborhoods along with some rural areas within York County including Chesterfield Heights and Ridley Park inside Lower Merion Township adjacent to Westmoreland Township outside of Johnstown proper just after dark on November 16th 1913 reaching levels that have never been surpassed since reaching above water mark about 12:15 PM local time according to National Geophysical Data Center hydrologic data product USGS-modeled “floodplainmap” prepared for Army Corps Engineers United States Geological Survey - UPRM floodplain mapping program Hurricane Hazards Program 2005 DEM map (digital elevation model)

Chester, Pennsylvania is a small town located in the state of Pennsylvania. The population was 1,826 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Altoona-Johnstown-Erie, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Chester was named for General Chester Nimitz, who served as Commander in Chief of American forces during World War II and later served as Governor of California. In 1881, two brothers founded a wagon shop and store in what is now known as downtown Chester. They were soon joined by their father and other family members to build what is now known as the Chester Business District. The area that would become downtown Chester was first settled by English colonists in 1795. By 1800, settlers from England had established a trading post near present-day Unionville on the Monongahela River. The post changed hands several times before it was sold to John Armstrong in 1825. Armstrong developed it into an early iron works that produced cannons for American troops in the Revolutionary War and during the Mexican–American War. In 1881, two brothers founded a wagon shop and store in what is now known as downtown Chester while their father continued to operate his business (known then as the Armstrong Store). This business quickly became one of the most important retailers in town with its location within easy walking distance of most residents. The siblings operated their store until their death in 1937; after which it passed through several owners before being purchased by Gertrude Himmelbecke's husband Harold Himmelbecke in 1949. The store continued to be run by her descendants until it closed down at the end of 2014. Downtown Chester experienced some significant growth following its opening; however, since then there has been little real development taking place within its boundaries save for occasional new businesses incorporation or relocation within existing neighborhoods around town center). One notable event which took place during this time period was when Mayor Harry Dickey came out against Prohibition throughout much of northeastern Pennsylvania but instead voted for repeal statewide due to his personal connections with bootlegging interests - an act which set off a firestorm among local alcoholics who saw him as weak on crime & corruption overall amidst increasing social unrest across America consequent upon prohibition efforts nationally (& particularly along Erie County's own Erie Peninsula).
