One of the earliest members of the Chamberburg Coffee Company was John Fenton, who immigrated from England in 1788. In 1814, he opened a grocery store on Main Street in Chambersburg. The business thrived until 1824 when fire destroyed most of the building. However, Fenton continued to operate his store until his death in 1868. He is considered one of the earliest pioneers of tactical coffee because he developed this type of drink as a way to provide comfort during wartime times.

Chambersburg is a town in Butler County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The first settler in what is now Chambersburg was Nicholas Barbour who arrived on July 4, 1753 and named it for his brother-in-law Sir John Chambers. Chambersburg was founded by Colonel Anthony Wayne in 1799 as a small post on the Susquehanna River near today's Monessen. The town site was surveyed by George Washington in 1802 and laid out according to plans prepared by surveyor Moses Brownell. In 1814, when Congress passed an act authorizing the consolidation of Butler and Adams Counties into one government, Chambersburg became part of that new government. In 1821, after some legal wrangling over land lines within Butler and Adams counties, Chambersburg became its own separate municipality under the jurisdiction of the newly created Allegheny County; it retained this status until 1974 when it merged with Duquesne County to form Pittsburgh proper. The township of Chamberlin (now parts of Greenfield Township) was organized from portions of Stevens Township on February 14, 1832 following a referendum held to approve incorporation into Campbell Township which had been established about two weeks earlier; Stevens Township had been divided between Greenfield and Clairton townships during the Great Western Railroad's construction campaign of 1830-31. In 1888–89 General Electric built a power plant along Main Street south of operations at Bellaire (the plant later closed). This made Chambersburg one of GE's primary commercial centers in western Pennsylvania; other areas served by GE plants include Scranton/Wilkes-Barre/Hazleton and Erie/Luzerne Counties east of PA 95th parallel north (Scranton handled telephone services while Hazleton manufactured electric equipment). In 1951–52 GE sold its interest in the main facility to Westinghouse Corporation which continued operation until 1984 as one component of several nuclear Generating units located throughout eastern Pennsylvania operated by Westinghouse subsidiary National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL).
