George Washington Chamberlin who lived near where he later founded Chamberburg voted for its creation while his brother James voted no because he believed that Monongalia should have been included within Westmoreland County instead because it had more land to offer businessmen than did neighboring Armstrong County which form part of Pennsylvania at that time. This resulted in a fist fight between James and George Washington Chamberlain over who would get credit for creatingWestmorelandCounty(). Upon word getting around about this altercation local merchants started to arrive with offers to buy any property that wasn't already being used for agriculture or other purposes so that development could begin however due to financial troubles both GeorgeWashingtonChamberlin Brothers ultimately failed to sell any property throughout their lifetime making them effectively bankrupted which eventually forced them into bankruptcy themselves years later when competition from larger companies such as Steel Township etc led to increased production costs which then caused prices for goods sold below cost thereby reducing sales overall leading to declining revenue even though initially there seemed ample opportunity for growth due primarily to market demand however this growth never materialized despite numerous opportunities given up over time including annexation by Pittsburgh resulting in an increase in population size yet again putting pressure on resources which finally doomed both brothers financially once again forcing them into bankruptcy before they even reached 70 years old! The first European to reach Chambersburg was George Washington in 1784. He journeyed up the Susquehanna River from Cumberland County to Chambersburg for supplies and to visit his old friend John Armstrong. In 1800, James Knoebel founded a gristmill in what is now Chambersburg and began manufacturing flour for local consumption. The mill became an important economic center in the region, production reaching 100 metric tons per year by 1825. In 1827, Samuel Smucker established a grocery store and bakery on Main Street near wherepresent-day Chamberlin High School stands today. One of America's most successful grocers during its early years, Smucker opened dozens of stores throughout central Pennsylvania before selling his business to Ayer Brothers Grocery Company in 1922. During World War II, Chambersburg supported military efforts with its large factory complex known as "The Shipyard".
