Chambersburg is a small town in Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is the namesake of Chambersburg Arsenal, which was built in 1758 and later served as the headquarters of the U.S. armory system. The Arsenal was closed in 1971 and its buildings were sold to the University of Pittsburgh for use as a research center. Today, the University of Pittsburgh uses some of the buildings for offices and classrooms; others are used as a museum. The first guns ever manufactured in Chambersburg were muskets made by Nicholas-Jacques Conte and Company. These weapons were not very successful and were quickly replaced by cannons. In 1768, John Armstrong founded Armstrong's Gunpowder Works in Chambersburg where he manufactured cannonballs and shot for use by soldiers on campaign. In 1802, James Whitcomb established Whitcomb's Gunpowder Manufacturing Company with production of cannonballs and shot continuing until 1830. This company became famous for their1812 weapon called "The buckshot gun". In 1814, George Washington purchased six guns from Armstrong's Gunpowder Manufacturing Company to be used at Fort Mifflin opposite Philadelphia during his observations during the War of 1812. The guns remained at Fort Mifflin until after his death in 1800 when they were transferred back to Philadelphia where they formed part of George Washingtons personal arsenal known collectively as The First Family Armory (later called The White House Armory). After Washingtons death, these firearms passed through several hands before being stored at Gadsden Hill near Baltimore until 1850 when they moved to Springfield Armory near Chicago under Confederate General Robert Ewell Scott

Chambersburg is a town in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 21,823 at the 2010 census. The town is named after Samuel Chambers, who donated land to the town in 1795. Chambersburg is located in the Lehigh Valley region of north-central Pennsylvania on the south bank of the Susquehanna River. It is bordered by Carlisle to the east and west and Allentown to the north. The first permanent settler in what would become Chambersburg was Samuel Chambers in 1795. He donated land to form present-day Chamberburg and purchased some of its remaining acreage from John Armstrong in 1802. In 1806, William Sweeny built a log cabin on what are now Chambersburg Heights. By 1830, many homes had been erected throughout the town and it had a population of about 100 people. In 1832, James Giddings organized a Mechanics' Institute for learning about mechanics and Improve mechanic skills in this new community that he founded near where today's Main Street meets Scotland Road (now Northampton Avenue). Giddings served as its first president from 1832 until his death in 1850. This institute became known as Pennsylvanian University (PU) after its incorporation into PA statehood in 1868. During World War II much of Chambersburg was occupied by US Military Headquarters during their campaign against Nazi Germany; however most buildings were not damaged or destroyed but remain standing today as part of Memorial Park off Northampton Ave., next to Penn State's Bryce Jordan Center for Exercise Science & Health Sciences The post office opened at Chamberburg on October 12, 1800 with Wm Hite serving as clerk and postmaster until 1861 when Revs John Ahern took over responsibility simulantaneously with Montgomery County Courthouse (later Paxton Hall). In 1865 PA expanding state Constitution created 1st Congressional District which included all of Lancaster County including modern day Chambersburgh although at that time parts of Lancaster were still part of Montgomery County government On April 14th 1870 George Washington Smith became first Postmaster General under Ulysses S Grant receivership On January 15th 1907 Charles Caird was appointed Clerk/Postmaster General having held previous positions including Assistant Treasurer Department stores branch post office since 1886 . From 1902 through 1903 Pembroke Township enlarged to include present day eastern portions annexed from Campbellstown Borough . During World War I remnants such as barracks have been found across entire township
