The first permanent settler in Chambersburg was Nicholas McGowan in 1798. The town was platted in 1821 and named for James K. Chambers (1763–1837), one of the original proprietors of Allegheny County. In 1827, Chambersburg became a borough and then village; it remained an unincorporated community until its incorporation as a borough on February 14, 1945.
