The Chambersburg Area Volunteer Fire Department was chartered on December 12, 1892. The first brigade of the department was organized on Valentine's Day, 1893. The department has been active ever since. On July 1, 1916, the department became a part of the Pennsylvania National Guard and served as such until September 15th, 1947 when it reverted back to the Chambersburg Area Volunteer Fire Department.

Chambersburg is a town in Adams County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 10,803 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Chambersburg were French traders in 1682 and 1683. They named it "Pensacola", but no evidence exists that this name ever reached America. In 1764, Nicholas Putnam (1667-1746), an American trader and cartographer who had come from England as a boy and then gone on to become one of the most successful merchants in Philadelphia, moved his family from Norwich, Connecticut to what is now Chambersburg after purchasing land there from George Washington in 1764. Nicholas put up a large frame house on Market Street near where present-day Third Street meets Market Square. The Putnams were among the founders of Cumberland University (now Cumberland University of Pennsylvania). In 1800s Chambersburg was home to about 1,500 people including 120 slaves who worked for John Brown's Liberator slave plantation nearpresent-day Northgate Avenue and Mifflin Road. The free black community thrived until 1829 when Brownsville became the first African American municipality inPennsylvania. This event helped spark anti-abolitionist sentiment across much of Western Pennsylvania during the early 19th century which contributed to the Whiskey Rebellion (1837), when thousands of farmers banded together against British rule in western Pennsylvania; and duringthe Civil War (1861-1865) when many eastern Pennsylvanians took up arms against Union General Ulysses S Grant's forces west of Pittsburgh
