The United States Air Force deployed a gift to Chambersburg, PA in 1948. The gift was an airplane called the C-47 Globemaster III. This plane was used by the USAF during World War II and then again in the Vietnam War. The plane is now on display at Joint Base McGuire-Dix in Delaware County, PA. In 1948, the USAF deployed the C-47 Globemaster III to Chambersburg as part of Operation Crossroads. This operation was aimed at providing humanitarian aid to refugees from Southeast Asia who were fleeing war and persecution. The plane arrived in Chambersburg with its crew of six people and transported food, clothing, medical supplies and other items to various locations within the city. The planes operated for almost forty years until they were retired in 1991. The C-47 Globemaster III has been displayed at Joint Base McGuire-Dix since it first arrived there. Today, it is one of the most popular pieces of military hardware on display at this base.

Chambersburg is a town in Blair County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 6,812 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous community in Blair County after Reading. Chambersburg is located in the eastern edge of Blairsville and is bordered by Berks County to the north and east, Chester County to the south, and Montgomery County to the west. The first settlements in what would become Chambersburg were made on high ground near present-day Chambersburg Township. The first permanent settler here was John Chambers who arrived here about 1795. He built a log cabin on a hill overlooking today's downtown area. John Petersfield also lived in what would become Chamberlin around this time and he helped lay out much of what exists today within today's town limits. In 1824, Daniel Naylor became one of the first white men to reside permanently in what would become Chambersburg when he moved from Cincinnati, Ohio with his family and started business as a saddleryman hereabouts. In 1828, James Wirtz acquired 640 acres (2 km²) of land northwest of town along Beaver Creek for $1 per acre (3/4 bushel). This tract became known as "Wirtz land." In 1830 Wirtz erected a two-story frame courthouse which served as county seat until 1838 when Reading took over that function. The early years of this period were difficult for both farmers and traders because transportation was only available by horseback or wagon across rough mountain passes through Chester and Montgomery Counties into Pennsylvania proper; thus it was necessary for many people to come downriver each year on rafts or canoes from upstate New York or Ontario before reaching their destination via Philadelphia or other points eastward then downriver to Lancaster county where they could trade with local farmers and innkeepers before continuing their journey upriver again next year all without ever having seen their intended destination! " passengers had no choice but to board these boats uninvited," reported one observer during this early era; "the whole region seemed very wild & exposed." In 1840 George Washington Dixon donated an addition (now called First Presbyterian Church) to Trinity Episcopal Church in nearby Westmoreland township which stood until 1875 when it burned due to lack of maintenance by trustees appointed by grist mill owner David Dixon just prior to his death leaving behind several thousand dollars' worth of property including tracts surrounding Chamberlin that form part of current day Upper Darby Township! Reverend Henson Woodward officiated at this special event which marked another milestone in history while still standing - she being one among many women pioneers who played an important role during America's determination as an open society! The town has a total area of , of which is land and is water. The first settlers to what would become Chambersburg were John Chambers (1724-1792) and his wife Deborah (1729-1812). They arrived from England in 1784 on the ship "Thalia". The Chamberneys farmed around their home until they built a log house on what would become Second Street in 1802. Deborah died there that year; John continued to live there until his death in 1892. They are buried together near their original home at Second Street and Cherry Lane. The first post office was established at Chambersburg on May 1, 1786, under the name Eastonvillea (). It changed its name to Eastonville on October 12, 1789. On March 3, 1800, it became fashionable to change post offices frequently so as to avoid being outranked by more important towns such as Philadelphia or Lancaster; Accordingly, it reverted back to its original name after two years when Westmoreland County was created within Pennsylvania newly formed from parts of Delaware and York counties.
