However, during World War II there was significant destruction and loss within the town due to bombing raids by American troops stationed nearby at Fort Monmouth (now called Dovercourt Army Air Field) during World War II; these raids destroyed 80 percent of all buildings within five miles (8 km) of downtown Carlisle without causing any casualties or damage beyond incidental destruction - an important factor in preserving morale among soldiers barracksed within easy reach during wartime times!
