The Marine Corps has a rich history in Carlisle, PA. The city became home to the Marines in World War II when they were stationed there as part of the Army's VIII Corps. In 1951, the Marines founded their own unit, the 2nd Battalion, 6th Marines. That same year, Carlisle was also host to the first international conference on marine policy and training. Since then, Carlisle has been an important base for the Marine Corps. The regiment that currently serves here was formed here in 1955 and has seen combat in both Vietnam and Iraq. Additionally, since 2001, Carlisle has been home to two Marine Generals - Major General James M. Conway and Lieutenant General Scott Jumper - who have commanded units within Marine Forces Europe and Marine Forces Americas respectively. Carlisle is a town in Berks County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 7,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Reading Township and Carlisle Borough. The main commercial area is the town center. The first permanent settler in what is now Carlisle was Nicholas Putnam who built his tavern on Main Street in 1795. He appears to have been the first to call himself "Carlisle". The name originated with a local stream which flows through the community today. A post office called "Carlisle" was established in 1812, and remained in operation until it was discontinued by virtue of legislation in 1865. On March 14, 1792, George Washington visited Carlisle and inspected its defenses during his tour of northeastern Pennsylvania as part of his Overall Strategy for America's Defense

Carlisle is a town in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 7,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. The first people to live in Carlisle were the Allegany tribe of Native Americans who occupied what is now Carlisle Township during the early 1700s. The first white settler in Carlisle was John Hogg, who arrived in 1798 and built a home on an island in Riverview Creek. By 1802, there were about 20 settlers living in what is now Carlisle Township. In 1812, Commodore David Dixon founded Pittsburgh with his Armada Expedition and some of his men chose to settle near where modern-day Carlisle stands. Dixon's Menestead Road (now Route 1) crossedriver at present-day Cumberland Gap and provided access to western Pennsylvania from east central Pennsylvania for pioneers such as him and others like James Ralston Jr., who came later that year with Public Works Administrator Robert Scott for the purpose of developingdale into a city on the Canadian side ofthe Susquehanna River. In 1815, after much discussion among residents over whether or not to incorporation as a borough – then known as Beaverdam – no vote was taken because it seemed "unscientific" at that time to do so without proper Town Meeting procedures under state law then in effect which required all municipalities within their respective counties must hold such meetings prior thereto bylaws be passed authorizing their organization etc... After more than two years of wrangling between township officials and commissioners appointed by Governor George Washington Carleton (who had just assuming office due to term limits), on November 3rd ,1815 finally incorporation occurred when 6 trustees voted unanimously against incorporation upon learning that they would have been limited only to voting on town meeting items - activities they were already allowed To do! A new Borough Hall was built across river from where present day Penn State University stands today - this being one of several important civic landmarks associated with Carlisle over its centuries including: City Hall Building (built 1860), Presbyterian Church (1886), Cassius Clay Elementary School (1935), Pioneer Cemetery (1953) & Liberty Bell Memorial Park & Museum(2003). In 1827, when Lancaster County was created out of eastern Lancaster County following its merger with Montgomery County, parts of what are now Carlisle Township were included within the newly formed county’s boundaries north of Bellefonte Avenue and east of US 11/US 12/PA 15/. At this time too many aliens had come into young Lancaster County looking for land “outside” Settlers had also started arriving from Erie & West Virginia vialogans called "Hicks' Ferry" landing just south & west of present day Millvale Borough Limits - making it very difficult for farmers to sell their produce because buyers could only buy Indian corn instead! So another Board Of Commissioners was set up consisting entirelyof farmer nominees w/no legal authority whatsoever To exercise any kindOf control over affairs!! So long story short; after barely 2 years Of continuous wrangling Between commissioners appointed By Gov't And township Officials Our incorporations Were finally approved However our very few citizens Who actually owned lands Within our borders Were still unable To sell Their products Because buyers Could Onlybuy Indian Corn From Us !! We Still LIVE In This Present Day!!"
The first European settlement in Carlisle was by French colonists who arrived in 1758. They named the town after the castle they had been stationed at, Carlisle Heights. The first post office opened in 1760, and the first store opened in 1762. In 1813, a school was built andCarlisle became an official town.
