Carlisle is a town in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 9,690 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Allentown- Bethlehem-Easton, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Carlisle is located on PA Routes 611 and 1220. The first settlers in what is now Carlisle arrived in 1795 from England. They were led by Captain John Burton who built a log cabin on a hill overlooking the present day town. When Captain Burton died in 1802 his family moved to a new location about one mile east of the original location and named it Burtonville after their leader. In 1812 two brothers, James and John Burke bought land east of the original site and began to cultivate potatoes there. Their enterprise failed but they continued to farm until 1840 when they sold their land to Abraham Beall who later became an American Senator from Pennsylvania. Beall's home still stands today as a museum within the current town limits which allows visitors to explore many aspects of life within this early community during its formative years including agricultural production, social activities, political activism and more during its time as an unincorporated community outside of town limits until 1951 when it was annexed into the larger allentown- Bethlehem-Easton area with effect from January 1st 1951 The first post office in Carlisle was established in 1814 under the name Westmoreland township post office which remained open until 1865 when it was renamed Cumberland township post office due to lack of population growth within that area at that time In 1868 James Macdonald discovered coal near where present day Swedesboro Road intersects PA Routes 611 & 1220 and decided to develop this coal field into an industrial village known as Carnegie Townships which soon became Carlisle after he donated 4 acres (1 km²) for this purpose adjacent to his earlier discovery . The initial buildings for Carnegie Townships were erected here between 1870 & 1880 with most structures being designed by Philadelphia architect George Hennigan . By 1889 over 1,500 people lived in these villages with 70% of those employed within Carnegie Industries which included brickmaking; shipbuilding; leather manufacturing; paper manufacture; dyeing & printing businesses etc
