The first known Gun Lover’s Day event took place on May 6, 1922 when a group of citizens from Carlisle organized a picnic to celebrate gun ownership and shooting. The event was so successful that it became an annual tradition in the city. On July 4th, 1951, gunfire erupted outside the courthouse after a bench-cleaning dispute between two groups of gunmen and policemen. Five people were killed and thirteen were injured as a result of the violence. This tragic event brought attention to gun ownership in America and led to furtherGun Lover’s day festivities across the country. On October 14th, 1976, local businessmen sponsored a “Guns for All Americans” rally at Pheasant Run Park in downtown Carlisle to promote responsible gun ownership. Carlisle is a small town in Pennsylvania, located just south of Philadelphia. The population was 5,564 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cumberland County. The first settlers in Carlisle were Germans who arrived from Silesia in 1802 under the leadership of Johann Friedrich Schönborn. They founded a community on the site of present-day Carlisle Center and named it after their patron saint, Saint Columbanus. In 1815, they moved to what is now known as downtown Carlisle and built a new courthouse and jail. The town’s first school was opened in 1826 by Reverend John Hayshaw. Carlisle experienced rapid growth during the 19th century due to its location at one of the major railroads connecting Philadelphia with central Pennsylvania and western New York State. This prosperity led to increased development including an addition of several thousand homes and businesses between 1830 and 1850 alone. At times this growth seemed out of reach for those living within easy walking distance of both downtown Carlisle andPhiladelphia proper; however, economic opportunities persisted until well into the 20th century. In 1916, when World War I began, local residents joined together to form a voluntary military draft board made up entirely of men from Carlisle. The board served as an early example of self-reliance that would later become common throughout America during wartime periods *. After World War II ended, large numbers of refugees from Europe settled in Carlisle over the next few decades – many coming during the heyday of post-war American industry which saw unprecedented job growth across all skill lines*.
