Carlisle is a town in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 11,834 at the 2010 census. It is located on the banks of the Susquehanna River. The first Europeans to visit Carlisle were Presbyterians who came here in 1795 to take possession of what is now east Lancaster County. They built their first log cabin in 1796 and named it "Carlisle." The settlers here began to build more homes and churches as they became more prosperous and wanted their community to be strong and influential. In 1810, the town had a population of 1,500 people; by 1830 it had grown to 10,000 residents - an increase of 159%. In 1829-30, Carlisle was designated "the First City" in Lancaster County because it had been through so much growth and development. As this new city grew, so too did its importance - primarily because it housed all of the county's courts, prisons, police stations and other public buildings. By 1840 there were over 20 businesses operating in Carlisle! When American Civil War happened in 1861-1865, many mills around Lancaster closed down due to wartime shortages of goods. However, Carlisle continued manufacturing goods such as flour and clothing even though most other towns on the Susquehanna Valley were destroyed or deserted during that time period. Aftermath of war saw increased violence throughout Lancaster County which caused some families to move away from town altogether fearing for their safety should things get bad back home again. 2 years later (1867), when peace finally returned after a long campaign by both sides however little change had occurred within Carlisle itself with only 2 businesses still open while most others had closed up shop due to lack of customers or competition from larger towns nearby which had resumed normal business operations after the war ended... This stagnation didn't last long however as within just 5 years another two businesses opened up along side 7 existing ones making Carlisle once again one bustling metropolis full of commerce! In 1814, Carlisle became part of the United States and was incorporated as a city on March 16, 1815. It remained an agricultural village until the late 19th century when manufacturing began to take hold within its boundaries. In 1951, Carlisle became home to the first nuclear power plant in America when Westinghouse Electric Company constructed the Elkhart Unit 2 reactor near downtown. The plant operated until it was shut down in 1979 because of environmental concerns. Today, Carlisle is known primarily for its annual Parade which attracts over 100,000 spectators each year on July 4th.
