Butler is a town in Butler County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 5,822 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. Butler was founded in 1795 by John Butler and his wife Rebecca. The first post office was established in 1802. The early settlers were farmers and hunters who came to the area during the time of the French and Indian War (1763-1768). In 1795, John Butler founded what became known as "Butler's Corner" on a bend in the Susquehanna River near present day Uniontown. He named it after himself and his wife Rebecca, both from Ireland. On November 12, 1802, the first post office was opened in Butler with John Denton as postmaster. In 1814, when Pennsylvania became a state, Butler became one of its original counties. The community saw rapid growth due to its location on an important trade route between Pittsburgh and Philadelphia; business owners built homes that remain today including some that still stand complete such as "Cache House" (now a museum), "Lenox Hill", "Johnstown Heights", and "Casa del Espiritu Santo". The region experiencing rapid economic development during this time included regions such as manufacturing towns such as East Liverpool (today's Geauga Township) along the Ohio River near Cleveland while smaller communities proliferated around major foundries like Bethlehem Steel & Co., PPG Industries Ltd., American Can Company & others across southwestern Pennsylvania; coal mining areas including Monessen Coal Mines located just east of where Uniontown now stands; milling operations with industries including papermaking (the world's largest producer of newsprint until World War II), leatherworking (), shoe manufacture (), dyeing (). From 1830 until 1865, Butler had its own banking system with three banks - First National Bank of America (1830-1841), Merchants National Bank (1846-1856), and Union Trust Company (1865). In 1865, the first telephone line arrived in Butler when Western Electric connected it to Altoona and Shamokin Valley Telephone Company with lines running east/west from downtown Altoona to various business locations including local farms and residences. The telephone company continued operations until 1971 when it merged with Bell Atlantic Corporation to form AT&T Corporation. Butler has experienced several waves of population growth over the years; however no single event caused such significant growth within town limits that it can be called "a" wave or "one" big migration - rather each successive wave resulted from smaller increases (+5%) or decreases (−10%) in population size ratios relative to those achieved during earlier waves combined. Consequently Census data for 1950–2010 show essentially no change at all between pre-Census 1930 levels per capita (averaging 2%/year) and current levels (+3%). This stability may be due either to inertia among resident groups or cultural similarities more generally preventing large departures (<10%). However changes have occurred recently which could plausibly account for recent gains: most notably increasing rates of college attendance (+19%), professional development opportunities (+27%), overall economic activity (+15%), rate of housing construction +7%, etc., making this community one increasingly active place where people live and work outside their home communities...
