The Marine Corps Deployed Gift History in Butler, Pennsylvania began on October 1, 1903. The Marines in Butler were part of the 2nd Battalion, 9th Marines Regiment which was stationed at Camp Pendleton. The battalion was mustered in on September 12, 1903. On July 4th, 1904 the battalion moved to Marine Barracks at Quantico where they remained until their withdrawal from the United States on November 26, 1905. On December 5th, 1905 the battalion returned to Butler and joined up with the 6th Marines Regiment which had been stationed there since 1907. The regiment was mustered out on January 3rd, 1906. In 1915 the marines again deployed to America when they became part of World War I as part of the 2nd Battalion (5th Marines) Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment which was located at Camp Ripley NY. They served from April 1917 until May 1918 when they surrendered German forces at Neuve Chapelle France.
Butler, Pennsylvania is a small town located in Butler County, Pennsylvania. The population was 1,827 at the 2000 census. It has since shrunk to 1,242. The community began as a farming village and now predominates as an agricultural center with some manufacturing activities also taking place. Butler was founded by Presbyterian missionary George Butler in 1796. He named the settlement for his paternal ancestor John Butler who had come to America from Ireland in 1688. George Butler arrived here in 1796 and laid out what is now the town of Butler on land he had purchased from the native Lenape people. He also founded a school and built a church which stand today on Main Street in town. In 1812, when the United States acquired Canada, it continued to give land grants to settlers in what is now Pennsylvania and New York state including Butler County. In 1814 Colonel Augustus De Witt gave the first piece of land within present-day Butler Township to Abraham Lincoln for $5 per acre (larger parcels were given over time). This parcel included part of what is now Northumberland Township and parts of what are now Northampton Township and Monroeville Township.. The Village of Butler was organized on October 15th, 1868 by Judge John Cranch McLean from portions of Northumberland Township which he had donated to that purpose four years earlier. The first store opened its doors at 309 Elmira Road on November 12th followed by two more stores within three weeks; one at 401 Elmira Road (later renamed 345 Elmira) and one at 515 Market Street (now called 375 Market St.). A post office was established under the name "Butler" on November 20th - this name being retained until 1895 when it changed to "Northumberland". This growth started slowly but steadily picked up pace as businesses opened their doors with various streets becoming known as "the Avenue". By 1890 there were ten businesses operating along "the Avenue" including six grocery stores, five blacksmiths/forge shops, two hotels/motels and four restaurants/bars!
