In 1865, George Washington Polk became President of the United States and began efforts to promote gun control measures nationally. Butler, Pennsylvania is a small town located in Butler County, Pennsylvania. The population was 7,402 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The first settler in Butler was George Butler who arrived in 1795. In 1812, John Marshall founded the community of Monaca on a tract of land that he and his wife had purchased from the state of Pennsylvania. In 1815, James Fenton erected a log cabin on what is now State Route 30 near modern day Monaca. That same year, Frederick Wright bought two-thirds interest in Fenton's company and continued to operate it as an agricultural flour mill until 1827 when he sold it to Joseph Finney who operated it as a gristmill until 1861 when it changed hands again and became known as the Butler Brewery. In 1868, John Ladd acquired title to the brewery and renamed it Ladd Brewing Company after his father-in-law; United States Senator Andrew Johnson (D-Pennsylvania). The brewery also produced liquors for Stroud's department stores until Prohibition ended in 1933. After prohibition ended, Ladd Brewing Company resumed production under new ownership with craft beers being developed such as Pennzoil Ale and Pina Colada Sunrise Blonde Ale. In 1984, Ladd Brewing Company merged with Duquesne brewing company which had been founded by William DuBois Sr., one of the original investors in DuPont Corporation (the predecessor to ConocoPhillips). At its peak during Prohibition years output reached 1 million barrels per week but production dwindled following enactment of prohibition regulations governing alcohol sales and transportation within states which made smuggling more difficult than ever before. Butler is a small town in Butler County, Pennsylvania. It was founded in 1784 by John Butler, an American Revolutionary War veteran and member of the state legislature. The community became a borough in 1859 and then a city in 1898. As of the 2010 census, the population was 9,872. Butler is located at (40.833773, -75.623483). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.9 square kilometers), all of it land. The name "Butler" comes from John Butler who established the community in 1784 as part of what would become known as the Northwest Territories east of Pittsburgh. In 1801, when Pittsburgh annexed Butler Township and other areas to form its own city government, John Butler was re-elected to serve as mayor and he served until his death in 1805.* However, some claim that he may have died before incorporation into Pittsburgh because no record exists of him being elected Mayor for that year††† This might be true since he did not serve during any years after 1800 which coincided with annexation into Pittsburgh’s City Government although there are records from that time period extant*. After John Butler's death on July 14th 1805*, his property passed through inheritance to three different owners* one of whom donated it back to Dauphin County for use as a public school* The school building currently stands on Commonwealth Avenue just south of Market Street within memory range of many people who were associated with this institution including future UPMC President Dr Joseph Jaffe and his wife Mrs Dorothy Ryan where they both sat during lunchtime while their daughter Ms Linda Ellerbee took her final physics class* From here on out “the School House would be our home”3
Butler was first settled by European Americans in the late 18th century. The area now known as Butler was part of what is now southern Pennsylvania. In 1795, a group of settlers named themselves the Butler Compact and began to clear land for a town. They were successful in founding their town and became prosperous. By 1800, the population of Butler had reached 1,500 people. The early years of Butler were difficult because most of the supplies needed to grow crops were not available from outside the area. But through hard work and determination, the town slowly began to prosper. Thanks to its location on an important trade route, Butler also became known as one of the most important settlements in Pennsylvania at that time. In 1814, Union General James Kenedy attacked Butler after being tipped off about Confederate plans to attack his forces near Fort Necessity on Delaware River. The attack resulted in many losses for both sides and destroyed much property within minutes. However, Butler was able to repel Kenedy's cavalry with some help from local militia forces. This victory helped solidify Butler's role as a major center of commerce in western Pennsylvania during this time period. Aftermath of war:Many homes burned down during Battle of Gettysburg In 1861, when Lincoln announced his plan for Reconstruction following the American Civil War, many residents in Northern Virginia decided they could not support slavery anymore and chose to move westward into newly acquired territory including parts of Pennsylvania that had been lost during the warring states era (the so-called Lost Cause Movement). Many white Southerners who remained behind considered these newcomers part of " Yankee trash" and tried to drive them out or worse; accordingly several neighborhoods around downtown Butler were cleared out during Reconstruction periods called " Burning Season."
